MBTI Type: ESTJ
Jacob is a highly strategic thinker, who makes decisions with his head; his argument for being severe upon the sheep herders who trespass on his ranch is that if he shows any kind of weakness, others can take advantage of it, so he doubles down on the law. After he has been mowed down by gunfire in revenge, he refuses to let his wife inform the sheriff of what happened or to get the law involved, because he knows the consequence would be severe for the ranch. He also helps her come up with the scheme of not allowing anyone to know whether he is alive or dead, by having her show up and conduct meetings for him, as his stand-in on the local commissioner counsel. He is primarily motivated to earn a living running the ranch and has no problem making logical and tactical decisions, such as running the cattle into the mountain, or selling off all the cows, keeping the heifers, and breeding them for next year. But his blind spot appears to be his emotions; he is unemotional and strict, unable to fully deal with his wife’s feelings, and often does things without consulting her or heeding her advice, only to turn around later and realize he overstepped or does not want to let her down, so he will make it up to her by being more ‘present.’ He doesn’t consider a wedding a valid reason to stop them from driving the stock up into the mountains, and thinks any girl worth her salt wouldn’t see it as a problem, either. His thinking is very rooted in the past, but also anticipatory in terms of trying to figure out what his enemies might do to retaliate. Jacob is quite firm on how he makes decisions, highly wise about cattle and how to run a ranch (from doing it for sixty years), and yet some of his decisions are impulsive and short-sighted; he doesn’t predict how his enemies will maneuver around him, and is shocked to be ambushed on the road and almost killed, and then to have the ranch ‘bought’ out from under him when the taxes are paid on it by his new adversary and neighbor, showing a low Ne adaptability in changing tactics but a lack of precision when it comes to anticipating his rivals.

Dutton’s hard-assed judgments are partly the reason why his family gets into such a mess; he is so hard on people, laying down such tough boundaries (with violence), that the Irish hate his guts. He tells them to stay off his land, and when they ignore him, he sends all their sheep to the Indian reservation and hangs the lot of them—only for one to escape and seek revenge. Jacob is so damn tough, though, not even a dozen bullets from a machine gun can kill him, though it takes him months to recover. And then he’s mad because he feels like a ‘feeble old man.’ He does not want his men to ‘see me this way.’ After his wife begs him to take it easy, he goes out and mounts a horse. When she tells him not to do something, he does it anyway to prove he’s the boss around here. He snaps and snarls at people, and wants them to leave him in peace, but also does not want unnecessary conflict with his wife, so he will often come back, sometimes admit he was wrong, and try to make amends. In general, he does not believe in soft-spoken talk (babying folks along), and is very direct and no-nonsense in “that’s how things are.”
