Spencer Dutton MBTI & Enneagram | 1923

ISTP 9w8 Characters

Spencer makes his living shooting things, and has no problem doing so to safe his life or the lives of others, even putting down a bull elephant that tries to kill him and Alex in their land rover. He then finds the nearest tree and climbs it for the night, prepared to defend his territory and hopeful that the lions won’t notice they are up there. He is easily able to learn to do things by simply putting his back into them, such as steering a tug boat, saving Alex from drowning, and doing whatever is necessary to make his way home across the ocean when his aunt informs him what has happened. Spencer is hands-on and present to the moment, often adaptive and flexible and fast-thinking on his feet. He spends his down time drinking in the bar, and runs away with Alex having only met her twice, but knowing they will be forever attached. He drops everything to take on new jobs or to hurry home, to help his family preserve the ranch, but also winds up in peril a lot of the time because he is impulsive. He shows flits of lower Ni, but is not too terribly interested in Alex’s many Ne tangents, flights of imagination, speculations about the future, or her metaphors. He is quiet and self-contained, and often complains that she talks too much, but can become more emotional under stress in small bursts.

Spencer handles everything calmly but with authority, and does not hesitate in telling others what he wants or in making decisions; when Alex asks him if she can come with him, he asks her if she minds if it’s dangerous, and when she says no, he allows her to get in the car. Months later, when she says she wants to get married, she thinks he won’t or will need time to think about it, but then and there he agrees and wants to do it right now, with no second-guessing. Most of the time, he wants to keep his temper in check and manages to do so, but can become authoritative when provoked. When Alex’s ex insults her on the ship, Spencer tries to avoid a fight, tells him to back off, and then punches him a few times; he later accepts a duel, disarms the man, and tells his father to stop his son, if he does not want him to wind up dead. In general, he’s a firm presence and a stabilizing force for Alex, who keeps his cool and doesn’t get upset about a whole lot, but doesn’t care about the law or the rules when he does get mad; he shoots one man for lying to him and putting him and his friends at risk, leading to his friend’s death.
