Bell categorizes everything according to logic and factual information. He prefers to wait and see the details of the case before investing in theories, and must run each possibility through a veil of logic before considering it. He is systematic and organized in his thinking, and greatly enjoys the process of analyzing information, determining the motivations behind actions, and asking questions no one else considers, in order to solve crimes. He is precise and clear in his definitions, and able to remain objective even in matters that directly concern the people he cares about. Patients love Dr. Bell for his warm bedside manner and genuine concern for their well-being. He is affable, polite, and a natural peacekeeper, except with those people whom have lost his professional or personal respect (through murder, deception, or cruelty); in some instances, he is willing to compromise to reach a desired end. He has great empathy for others’ suffering and is able to open up and share his true feelings with Doyle. His concern is for the greater moral welfare of all involved. Even when he must say something harsh or condemning, Bell is apologetic and “takes no pleasure” in saying it. On rare occasion, his feelings are hurt by criticism and his personal dislike for someone influences his views on a case, causing him to have infrequent and uncharacteristic emotional outbursts. He views people and situations as “abstract problems,” and is willing to re-organize his theories when new evidence puts a different spin on what he knows. Bell has an uncanny and insightful method of reading between the lines; he discerns from the tenor of Doyle’s fiction that he is still in mourning for the woman he loved, and has lost hope in good triumphing over evil. He often brings in unrelated information or concepts to a case, in order to solve the problem at hand, and strives to not only see the larger picture at all times, but break it down into individual points of interest. He is comfortable hypothesizing with Doyle on interpretations, different ways evidence can be seen, and is not too proud to admit to erroneous conclusions. Both in the process of solving the case and in his daily life, Bell brings a wealth of personal information and attentiveness to detail. He often shares an extensive history of the person or situation they are exploring, showing his tendency to extensive research both prior to and during the case. He often asks numerous detailed questions, in an effort to gather as much information as possible. On occasion, he relates a situation to his own life experience or shares a story from his past in order to clarify his point. He admits to the desire to return to “a routine” after solving a case, but also finds it hard to forget the things he regrets.

Though he has put his criminal deduction system to good use, Bell first and foremost developed it for his own use, as a special talent unique to himself… something 5s are prone to doing (spending a great deal of mental effort and time inventing their own processes). He has the gift of emotional detachment, which allows him to notice and remark on Doyle’s increasing tendency to let a pretty face sway his opinions. He values logical consistency and precision above all else. Bell trusts his own logic far more than anyone else’s, although he uses Doyle to spark outside ideas. He is more meticulous, logically-detached, and stronger in his views than Doyle. When Doyle “falls” for a mesmerist’s “tricks,” Bell reminds him not to become emotionally entangled in the case, but to view it as an abstract problem. His gift of the 5’s detachment helps him avoid biases in all but his final case, where his dislike of a man’s total incompetence causes him to miss out on vital clues. Bell’s 6 wing becomes most evident in the final case, where Doyle siding against him causes him some self-doubt. Bell has become so used to their partnership that to have Doyle share the logical views of his rival shakes him.
