Matt has such a long history with Elena, as friends and then as more, that he finds it hard to move on for awhile. He prefers to stay close to home, and attend to his family (when he has one) and friends, rather than venture out into the world. Matt references his own experiences and observations often when dealing with other people (“I’ve never seen you be nice, so no, I don’t think you would make a nice human”). He is down to earth, practical in his decisions, and oriented toward protecting his future rather than risking it. He is unafraid to tell it like it is, when others ask him for his opinion – he tells Rebekah she is mean, Caroline that she is a spoiled, needy brat, Tyler that he is a selfish jerk, his mother that she needs to shape up and act like an adult, etc – because all of these things are true. He can prove them based on facts and past experience. Matt believes in having a good work ethic – in doing his job, in showing up on time, in trying to achieve good grades, and in having a plan for the future. He is willing to do whatever it takes to accomplish their goal, even if it means risking his own life in the process. Though he cares extremely deeply about the people closest to him, Matt doesn’t often open up about these feelings. He doesn’t burden others with his emotions or particularly like it when they can’t control their feelings. Though he can and does get hurt, it takes him awhile to admit to it… and he prioritizes some people over others, when it comes to ensuring their safety. He is always there for Elena, his first love. Matt doesn’t really care what other people think of him, if he believes what he is doing is right. He’ll also refuse to do anything he isn’t comfortable with, and when he’s done with someone… he’s done. Part of him resents the fact that he has to be so responsible, and stay in Mystic Falls, because he has a greater interest in going places and doing things; he takes off for the summer with Rebekah to gain greater life experience and try out a Bohemian lifestyle. But for the most part, Matt worries about not being able to provide for himself and Vicki, and makes choices oriented to minimize the potential future fall-out. He is cautious, because he can see the many ways a situation could go very wrong.

Matt is far more responsible and reliable than his sister, whose 7ish ways he sees as selfish, self-destructive, and problematic (not to mention his mother’s similar attitude). He winds up being the responsible “adult” who makes all the money and resents them not doing their share of the work. Matt does what he thinks is right, whether or not others agree with it. He imposes rules as the sheriff to keep people in Mystic Falls safe, even if it means banning all vampires from entering the town. He makes a good cop because he doesn’t cover up his mistakes, but is honest and truthful in what he thinks. Matt will go out of his way to help people, even if he has not personal stake involved, though he also has a particular fondness for Elena.
