MBTI Type: ISFP
Marie may defer to others with greater power than her, but on a few matters of principle, she refuses to back down from her own feelings. When she finds out Madame Du Barry is a former prostitute and only at court to sexually please the king, Marie refuses to speak to her or address her in public, even when it becomes a diplomatic incident. Others beg her for the sake of the alliance to patch up their feud, but Marie cannot force herself to do it and continues to refuse, until the king threatens her in private. She can get so caught up in her own feelings that she’s neglectful of her friends, such as when she chooses new “favorite” courtiers, without thinking about how it will affect the current favorites; she replaces the princess with another woman, and has to be told by her brother that you have “treated your friend appallingly” before she recognizes that what she did was hurtful and apologizes to her. Marie tries every way she can think of to make inroads with Louis, but eventually tires of it and insists he do some of the work for a change. She can be quite biting and caustic under stress and/or when she’s not paying attention to diplomacy (calling him limp and unaffected, accusing him of never doing anything useful, and insulting people to their face), in a rare display of her inferior Te. She shows Se in how sumptuous and extravagant her lifestyle choices are; she’s mainly preoccupied with fashion, food, and the pleasures of life – she finds hunting and horseback riding exciting, she chooses parties and outings over books, and she does her best work when at gala events and out dancing, in terms of advancing diplomacy. She can also be impulsive and headstrong, losing interest in people and leaving them behind, and showing no desire not to rush France forward into a new way of being. Marie tires abruptly of court mourning and demands they change it from a year to a few weeks, so she can get on with the business of “ruling.” She then replaces almost all of the ladies in her household, ushering out the “old” regime to make way for the new one.

Marie is clearly an attachment type, since she defers many times to other people’s opinions over her own, as a placeholder for her own views. She cannot ride a horse, because her “mama forbade it.” Dr. Mesmer in one episode tells Marie that she does not believe in herself enough, and needs to learn to trust in her own instincts. Like most 6s, Marie gathers allies around her to make herself feel safe. She tells Louis once that she doesn’t feel safe around his family, that they are predatory, and he hasn’t made it any easier for her by protecting her. Marie feels that anywhere she turns in France lies a “trap” just waiting her to step into it. She pretends to be more confident and assertive than she actually is; at first, she defers a lot to the woman in charge of her household, even though she dislikes her and hates all the stupid rules at Versailles. Marie several times moves into low 3 under stress, by self-inflating and pretending to be more courageous and assertive than she actually is; this mask drops in private and behind closed doors, when she stops to take deep breaths and look fearful. She moves toward her husband many times, trying to get him to be receptive toward her, and when that fails, she becomes ‘reactive’ and provokes him. More and more, Marie moves into her 7 wing in sating her need for affection with temporary distractions, gambling, and pleasures. She is naïve and too trusting, sometimes paying off her friends’ debts and being oblivious to their bad influence on her. She can be hedonistic and over-indulgent, swinging between recklessness and not caring what people think and being concerned with her reputation.
