INTP 9w1 Characters
INTPs make good inventors, because once they understand the basic internal components of how something works, they can use that information to create new technologies—which is exactly what Marshall does for SD-6. He is quite confident and even arrogant about his amazing computer skills, even bragging to the CIA about how he hacked into their system and disabled their firewalls while pretending to write a code for the Chinese government. Problems never stump him, because he can always come up with an inventive way around them … by creating new technology, hacking computers, helping Sydney diffuse a bomb while the clock is ticking down… he’s somewhat detached, interested in impersonal things, and can make rational decisions under pressure. Marshall is a master at inventing new gadgets at the spur of the moment; he comes up with great ideas for unique things that would help them out of a bind, then finishes them and hands them off (“this looks like a lipstick, but…”). He is also detail-driven and rambly, since he loves to introduce them with the history of the object, what it reminds him of, then derail into an explanation about his own taste preference or what they might like … and then someone will remind him to get to the point. Oh, but the point isn’t FUN. The roundabout journey to reaching the point is way more fun, isn’t it? Marshall also had a photographic memory; once he sees a line of code, he can remember it, but he’s anxious about being “in the field” because he’s so sensory-oblivious and doesn’t know how to do anything but hack himself out of a bad situation. He can write computer code, but is no good on tactical missions that require him to leave the office. He sometimes references stuff from the past in his explanations (old movies, cartoons, etc). Marshall has adorable inferior Fe in that he’s clueless about people and their feelings, but really wants everyone to like his stuff, tell him how cool it is, and get a kick out of it. He’s disappointed if no one looks impressed and will sometimes over-explain in an attempt to get them to smile or encourage him.
Enneagram: 9w1
Marshall has trouble staying on topic; like a lot of 9s, he rambles endlessly, tells long stories to get to the point, and is also hyper-aware of how others are responding to him. He will notice mid-ramble that someone is scowling at him, clear his throat, and get to the point rather than get told off. He is sensitive to brisk tones or annoyance from his peers, and wants everyone to be happy and approve of him; sometimes overdoing it with giving compliments instead of focusing on the matter at hand (congratulating Jack on being promoted, instead of just telling them about this new gadget he invented). He is optimistic, good-natured, confident, and easily impressed by others, but can also become anxious under intense situations. When he’s kidnapped and held hostage, Marshall tries to make light of the situation, joke around to keep things fun, and then finally feels anxious and assumes that his friends will come and rescue him (he is loyal to them, why wouldn’t they be loyal to him?). He wants to do what is right, has a generally non-judgmental personality, and likes feeling as if he is contributing to the greater good by first working for SD-6 and then working for the CIA.
