Richard Carmody MBTI & Enneagram | All Creatures Great and Small

ISTJ 5w6 Characters

Dominant Introverted Sensing – a strong emphasis on being realistic and detailed, and on personal experiences being a reliable source of information: Richard is chock full of all kinds of data related to his favorite topic of interest, which is veterinary practices, and quite eager to learn about new studies and information that might shed light on the farmers they are dealing with. But since he’s never practiced real medicine, he struggles to adapt to country life, to interact with the farmers in a respectful way (he assumes he knows more than they do, and scoffs at old-fashioned practices). It takes him time to earn people’s trust and to recognize how things are done in Darrowby.

Auxiliary Extroverted Thinking – relying on facts, drawing logical conclusions, being efficient and straightforward: His Te makes him very knowledgeable about facts, medicines, and being organized, but not a people person at all. His bluntness immediately offends various people (he can’t figure out why Mrs. Pumphrey is treating her pets like people, since they are “animals” who only respond with “basic instincts” rather than feelings; he tells a man who is itching that he gave fleas to his turtle, etc) and he has to be taught by James and Siegfried how to be pleasant, take an interest in people, and say nice things before he gives them news of any kind.

Tertiary Introverted Feeling – unwilling to go against their personal values and self-contained in their feelings: He’s diligent, hard-working, and often clueless about his effect on others, but catches himself later (“Ah, you mean later, not discuss it now!”). He seems callous at times because of his poor social skills, but actually cares a great deal about doing a good job.

Inferior Extroverted Intuition – curious about the future and in different possibilities, but skeptical of “unrealistic” ideas: Though interested in new advances in the practice, Richard isn’t very imaginative and often takes things at face value; he’s so serious and literal, metaphors and local sayings (like “penny for your thoughts”) confuse him.

Enneagram: 5w6

Enneagram 5 – a loner whose avoids creating dependencies and whose esoteric tastes lead them to renounce normality in search of the unexpected: Richard is often so eager to share his learned information, he bores other people and/or fails to take their feelings into account (such as when James says sometime they ought to discuss things, and he eagerly starts talking about pig stomachs at the dinner table). He is very withdrawn and not people-driven; he dives back into what he can find out about a situation, to avoid emotional entanglements, and is very insistent upon being seen as competent. Richard hides behind his books, and treats them as the absolute authority; he won’t even look over a cat or a dog without first consulting one of his many volumes. He insists “knowledge is power,” but finds it difficult to be a “people-person” because in his mind, he’s just reciting what he read. While he enjoys being a vet, and has to robotically learn to “care about the people as well,” he winds up taking a scholarship at the London University to do nothing but sit in a lab all day and study things, which is ideal for him since he avoids most human behaviors, contact, and has no interest in being social. All of his friends agree that in a library with a book is where he belongs.

6 wing brings in a desire to connect and find things in common with others: He’s easily intimidated by Mrs. Pumphrey, and feels bad that she will never call him “Uncle Carmody,” since her “dog” doesn’t “like him.” Richard, when faced with intense situations, defaults into having Siegfried lead the way rather than wanting to do it himself (“Maybe you should ask Mr. Farnon”). He’s afraid to drive a car, insists he cannot do it, and is not able to get past his block until Mrs. P tells him he must drive her Rolls Royce, and talk to Trickie-Wu all the time to keep the dog calm. “I got so busy thinking of things to say, I forgot to be afraid” he says later.
