Reinhold von Rumpel MBTI & Enneagram | All the Light We Cannot See

INTJ 5w4 Characters

Reinhold has become convinced that even though he is dying, if he can find a famous cursed diamond, possessing it will make him live forever. It’s not remotely realistic, but he has become obsessed with finding it, to where while the entire city is going up in flames and the Americans are about to come in and wipe out the Germans, he doesn’t care about the “greater cause,” he just wants the diamond. He is thinking in long terms, plays a long game, and doesn’t leave even when it would be beneficial for him to do so. He speaks in highly abstract terms. He would rather die than not see his vision actualized in the real world. Reinhold is a stereotype in that he is very logical in other ways, efficient in how he finds information, and callous in how he powers through people to get what he wants; he knows torturing them usually gets him information, and it makes no logical sense to him that others would die to protect someone else or even to hide a jewel from him. He uses official channels to get what he wants and is primarily self-absorbed and wrapped up in his own wants and needs. Others’ pain and suffering does not affect him (bad Fi and disordered antisocial tendencies). His inferior Se is poor at environmental awareness; Marie can shoot and kill him, and Werner can almost overpower and strangle him, if not for his own size. He is so fixated on his goal, he can’t turn away for any other reason, even as bombs are going off all around him.

Enneagram: 5w4

Reinhold believes in a fantastical object that holds the potential to prolong his life, rather than be rational about his prospects, which shows how out of touch and magical a 5’s thinking can be, when fixated on a unique perspective. He is callous, withdrawn, and mostly concerned only with his own well-being; when the prostitute he has been seeing asks him to get her out of the city so she won’t be killed, he asks, “Why would I do that?” and it’s only when she offers him the information he wants that he considers it (presumably, we don’t see what happens after that). He is so damaged and emotionally disconnected as a 5 that he doesn’t see most people as human, and does not mind disposing of them, shooting them, torturing them, all to reach his desired end. He is haughty, selfish, and elitist, seeing himself as superior and more deserving of things than others, and has no desire to go along with anyone for any reason other than to serve his own ends.
