Anne Shirley MBTI & Enneagram | Anne of Green Gables

ENFP 4w3 Characters

Her sheer “scope” for the imagination astounds and sometimes irritates Marilla, since Anne can take anything at all and make it either melodramatic or poetic. She makes up fantastic stories about ghosts and haunted woods, but also daydreams and romanticizes on every subject. She has a terrific metaphor for everything and a relentless curiosity toward everything in life, from what makes the red roads red to her academic interests. She is an interesting, creative teacher who tries to help others see the possibilities for change in their life. She ties many of her ideas and thoughts and experiences into things she has gone through in her own life; and relies heavily on things she has learned in the past to make present decisions—this comes in handy when she saves Minnie May, because in her former years, she dealt with croup in children quite often. Anne doesn’t always like to talk about her past, but often speaks of the books and poetry she has read, and has sentimentality for the “window friends” she made, as well as her beloved Green Gables. Eventually, Gilbert convinces her to write stories based on her own experiences rather than just her imagination (inferior Si). Anne has had such a hard life in the asylum that she seeks to place significance on even the most menial of things – to name flowers, trees, and beautiful places, and to derive some great pleasure from all that she encounters. She is intensely emotional, but channels that emotionality into her imagination rather than deal with the dull reality. She has a strong sense of what she believes is right and wrong and is unflinching in many of her opinions, from her long-lasting resentment toward Gilbert to her violent reaction to insults and slights. When necessary, Anne can take control—of her friends, of her life, and in her classroom. She can come up with lesson plans and organize her time well (although she doesn’t enjoy it, and when young, her mind wanders frequently). She has no problem taking charge of the school play, nor of speaking her mind. Anne tends not to compromise on anything she feels strongly about.

Enneagram: 4w3

The endless tragedy of her life is a big deal to Anne, who ruminates on how no one has ever wanted her (because of her red hair), and asks Marilla if she’s ever been in “the depths of despair.” Anne has to give in to, and indulge, every intense emotion, from happiness to total despair. She cannot move on with her day until she’s processed and vented her feelings. As a sexual subtype, she’s aggressive and competitive, channeling her need to be the best (via her 3 wing) into beating Gilbert at intellectual pursuits. Her 3 wing also makes her more sharing of her feelings than many Fi-users, needing to vent and express her 4 deeper emotions before she can move on with them. She can be needy under stress, emotionally moving into 2ish people-pleasing behaviors.
