What does an unhealthy INTJ look like? Fictional INTJs often show us the darker side of dominant Introverted Intuition (Ni): becoming so committed to a particular vision of the future that they ignore contradictory evidence in the present. Combined with underdeveloped inferior Extraverted Sensing (Se), this can produce rigidity, tunnel vision, poor awareness of immediate threats, and an unwillingness to adapt when reality refuses to cooperate. Using INTJ characters such as Governor Tarkin, Peter Weyland, Dennis Nedry, Magneto, Gustavo Fring, and Antonio Salieri, this guest post explores what unhealthy Ni and inferior Se can look like in action.
Editor’s Note: This is a solicited guest submission from one of my friends/fellow hobbyist typists, an INTJ 9w1. If you’re unfamiliar with these terms, she references the functional stack by the “nicknames” for each function. An INTJ’s functional stacking is Introverted Intuition (Ni), Extraverted Thinking (Te), Introverted Feeling (Fi), and Extraverted Sensing (Se). Enjoy!

Delusional INTJs
Let’s start with delusional/unhealthy-enough-to-be-a-danger-to-themselves and those around them aspect of Ni domination and how to identify it in INTJs. Note that this is for INTJ only; INFJs also have Fe, which complicates things and can make them spiral in much less obvious and erratic ways.
INTJs are more straight-forward and predictable than INFJs due to the presence of aux Te, which is grounding unless the person is quite literally psychotic. I am not going to include characters that are full-on psychotic, i.e. are no longer oriented in physical reality at all, since cognitive functions pretty much break down at that point anyway.
The famous character examples of delusional dominant Ni and willfully suppressed inferior Se’s that I will be using are: Governor Tarkin (1st Star Wars movie), Peter Weyland (Prometheus), and Dennis Nedry (Jurassic Park).
All three are considered geniuses in their respective fields, and if you study them, you can clearly see a common thread in my listed examples: these characters all have a very narrow, uncompromising vision of how they want things to pan out long-term and severely over-commit in that one area of perception. Tarkin won’t take in that the Death Star is vulnerable to attack by X-wing fighter ships, Peter Weyland won’t accept that the Engineers are not benign gods able and willing to provide him with the secret to eternal life, and Nedry refuses to accept that he won’t be able to pull off his grand master plan in the middle of a tropical hurricane. This is a very clear example of willing over knowing dominating every aspect of their consciousness.
All three characters died rather grisly and frankly useless deaths, because cognitive rigidity made them too blind to the physical realities of the world around them.

Underdeveloped INTJs
Next we have underdeveloped/under-utilized Se. My examples are Magneto (Ian McKellen version) Gustavo Fring (Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul) and Antonio Salieri (Amadeus)
These characters are not delusional to the point of earning a Darwin Award, because they know they’re practically helpless if they’re forced to engage a threat physically and do their best to avoid scenarios where environmental awareness/tactical IQ and fast reflexes are needed.
Magneto hides behind his mutant ability and poses no threat to anyone in close quarters if there is no metal, and Gustavo also retreats from the physical world and does everything to avoid meeting criminal associates face-to-face. Salieri also willfully suppresses his innate sensory desires (women, substances) which makes him look virtuous and disciplined in the eyes of everyone else (especially the Holy Roman Emperor!) but leaves him feeling constantly unhappy and frustrated. Salieri, while having a superior IQ, is not a creative genius, and his envy of Mozart’s easy, effortless talent is instant. And yet, Salieri has ascended to the coveted position of court composer at the Emperor’s court, but he landed that job through careful planning, skillful strategic capabilities and propensity for office politics (stroke His Majesty’s ego just enough: too little means you’ll lose his ear, and too much makes you appear sycophantic, which the Emperor hates) rather than a display of naked, raw musical talent.
Magneto and Gustavo Fring have different Enneagram types and some temperamental differences, yet they share a lot of similarities as well: both were subjected to severe trauma that is basically impossible to fully recover from because of traits they had no control over: Magneto being Jewish during the Holocaust, and Gustavo being extremely poor, mixed race and gay in 80’s Chile. Both come to America naive and idealistic (“this is supposed to be the country of opportunity and peace!”) only to have the grim facts of bigotry and cruelty shoved in their face with tragic results. Magneto, in time, becomes paranoid and starts preparing for another Holocaust, this time targeting mutants
Both manage to avoid complete mental collapse and function in day-to-day life because their judging functions are actually quite healthy: both build communities around themselves centered around mutually beneficial interactions (Magneto’s Brotherhood of Mutants and Gustavo’s Los Pollos Hermanos restaurant staff, as well as other chosen associates in the “shady” realm of money laundering and drug distribution) but also a sense of family and genuine warmth.
Their Fi sensibilities are sometimes subdued but nevertheless always present and expressed through actions, and both men have moral boundaries they won’t cross; in Magneto’s case it’s the use of non-lethal containment instead of deadly force against enemy mutants, even when deadly force would be the strategically safer option. Gustavo also shows Fi development in his decisions and general moral outlook: people “not in the game”, i.e. regular “civilians” rather than criminal associates must not be harmed in any way unless absolutely necessary, a trait completely missing from the sadistic, extravagant Salamancas and other cartel bosses.
Gustavo in particular over-uses the psychological defense mechanism of compartmentalization; he is simultaneously a philanthropist who cares deeply about others, and makes frequent and large monetary donations to underprivileged communities, both in the US and South America. For his psyche to remain intact, his two lives must not intersect, either in thought or in physical space.

While Magneto is motivated by fear of the future, Gustavo Fring and Antonio Salieri are mainly motivated by revenge: Salieri, in his mind, against an unjust God who chose Mozart to be his instrument over him, and Gustavo against the sadistic cartel capo Hector Salamanca who murdered his lover/business partner Max Arciniega and brutally assaulted him on the ground next to Max’ corpse in 1988. Gustavo does not forgive or forget; he spends the better part of two decades thinking up a revenge plan against Hector and the entire cartel, but due to his inferior Se and detachment from the physical world, he remains docile and outwardly compliant, because he still greatly fears the hyper-violent Salamancas and knows a direct confrontation with any of them will result in his death, or a fate even worse than death.
Both Salieri and Gustavo have chosen poison as their weapon of choice: it’s non-confrontational and simultaneously offers great leeway for plausible deniability. Both tend to freeze up when directly confronted; when Mozart dies writing the Requiem mass and Salieri is caught in his victim’s home, he is scared off by Frau Mozart, a small woman he should be able to easily over-power. Instead he freezes up and does not resist when she yanks the pages out of his hands and puts them in a locked closet. All that scheming and manipulation for nothing!
Salieri is certainly a narcissist, but he is not psychopathic; in his older years, while still obscenely rich, he falls into the grasp of his repressed lower functions, begging an empty house for a long-dead Mozart’s forgiveness and constantly numbing his Se cravings with his only vice: sweets. At this point he has become a complete recluse who chooses not to see anybody in person and conducts all his business through a locked door.
There you have it, my character examples of unhinged INTJs!
