Atlas bases all of her understanding about artificial intelligence on her own subjective memories of interacting with it, on what happened to her mother, and on how Harlan manipulated and betrayed her into establishing his independent learning link. She hates it as a result, and wants nothing to do with it, preferring to go “old school” and deliver information via print out sheets. She freaks out when thrust into a dangerous situation in which she has no lived experience, and has no idea of what to do as she free-falls through the sky after their ship blows up. She is smart enough to figure out how to make the suit do things with some time to think about it, but also frankly tells Smith to stop trying to be her friend, that she won’t establish the link, and he needs to give her as much control as he can without it. Atlas is a good analysist and very logical, someone who chooses to take out their enemy even when it could cost her both their lives, but also not a people person. She prefers to work with data, she is blunt and uninterested in whether people like her when trying to get the job done, and a closed nut that is tough to crack emotionally. Smith has to work for days to get her to open up and confide in him about what actually happened, and then we find out she has bottled this up for years. It’s only through his acceptance and reassurance that she is not to blame that she lets him into her Fi heart and loves him enough to trust him completely. Her inferior Ne thinks in terms of how things could go wrong, rather than right. She can’t imagine AI has anything good about it, until she meets Smith and interacting with him changes her mind, giving her a new way into the future.

Atlas has a reputation for not being a pleasant person to be around, because she has no interest in getting along with others, just on pursuing her analysis. Her fear about AI comes from her past traumatic experiences, but Atlas deeply resists learning to trust it, warns others against it, and refuses to let Smith “synch” fully with her mind until it becomes absolutely necessary to open up and trust him, to save her life and her home planet. She spent most of her career behind a desk doing analysis in one specific area, became an expert on Harlan, and reluctantly moves out of her comfort zone on a mission to recover him. She is thrown into a robot suit against her will, and then winds up arguing more with Smith and dismissing his attempts to get to know her, than she does initially trusting him. It’s a huge step forward toward the end when she confides her trauma in him, and tries to save his life by not wanting to leave him behind on the planet. Atlas has to move up her lines to 7 to become more adventurous, otherwise she just keeps her head down, lives alone, and has no friends with which to play real chess; at the end, she still seems more comfortable with artificial intelligence rather than connecting to real people. Her 6 wing is anxious, reactive, and worried about what could go wrong on the mission; she reminds others that Harlan knows them super well, and is always six steps ahead of them. Over time, she becomes able to trust Smith and depends on him to have her back and keep her safe, but it is an emotional victory hard-won on his part.
