Introverted Feeling
Kiri is the most introspective, reflective, and private of Jake Sully’s children. She forms unshakable conclusions about what matters to her, independent of how others feel about it. Others harassing her about lying in the shallow water and staring for hours at grains of sand do not prevent her from doing it, or change her feelings about creation and her deep connection to it.
Her bond with Ewya is personal and sacred, beyond what is taught and socially enforced by the Na’vi. They do not experience Ewya in the way she does, through her individual beliefs. She firmly believes Ewya does her will through her, Kiri, and Ewya will answer her if she will risk her own life to enter the “other world” and appeal to her for help. She confesses to her father that she can “feel” Ewya all around her, all the time, in every leaf and stream and animal and bird.
To Kiri, that Ewya would not come to their rescue and protect the animals and Na’vi from dying is unthinkable; she sees Ewya as the embodiment of all that is good, compassionate, and just. Though her family tells her never to connect to the underwater spirit tree again, since she could have a seizure and drown, when she sees the tulkan and her friends dying, she is willing to perish to appeal to the Mother for help. This feels like a worthy sacrifice to her.
Even though it is not rational to think that Ewya will save Spider from suffocating, Kiri believes she can and will make him “breathe” like the Na’vi. She takes off his mask, connects to everything, and asserts her will… and she is intuitively correct, because it comes true and Spider is forever freed from his sky people-based limitations. Others question her, but she never doubts her beliefs and acts on them, anyway.
Her compassion is selective and internal; she connects deeply to the earth, to animals, and to nature, and will withdraw from anyone who tries to bully her rather than defend herself. She is aware of and able to sort out her internal emotions, even if she does not volunteer them. After Spider is taken away from them, when her father asks what’s wrong and if she misses her adopted brother, Kiri says yes, she does, but that’s not what is bothering her; it’s that she doesn’t fit in here and cannot understand why she is so different and connected to the planet in ways that make her seem strange to the other children.
Extraverted Intuition
Initially, I thought Kiri was a Se user, but after Fire & Ash and thinking about her on the whole, I feel Ne fits her better. When her brothers get into physical altercations, she never gets in the middle of them or tries to affect the sensory environment. Instead, she tries to connect to Ewya through a spiritual connection and send animals, creatures, birds, and vines after their enemies. She has an intuitive “wonder” about life that her siblings lack, because she is trying to see under the surface of what it all means and how Ewya is connected to all of it; she feels the Mother in everything. In this way, she is abstracting away from what is visible to focus on the meaning it holds for her (FiNe).
She is constantly asking open-ended questions about Ewya, her origins, her mother, the nature of connection, what is possible rather than what is likely, and about human consciousness. When she visits her mother’s avatar, she is curious about how she came to exist, and what it all means. She wants to connect to her mother in the great beyond, and to understand how she has no father.
Kiri accurately believes Spider can become like the Na’vi and breathe their air, even though her own mother died during the transition and she has no proof of it being possible. This time, she feels certain it will work, and she’s right. When she links with the spirit tree, she is exploring what is possible and traveling beyond the “other world” into a realm full of Ewya. She treats it as a way of life, as transcendent. She uses that connection as a way to talk with Ewya and to intervene in what happens in the real world indirectly by sending other creatures to attack their enemies.
Introverted Sensing
Her sensory interactions with Pandora are quiet, still, and reflective. She spends long periods of time staring at things, intrigued by minute details and tiny fish. She loves to touch things in the ocean and learns to hold her breath for long periods of time so she can plug into the underwater spirit tree. She is more hesitant than Lo’ak to rush into situations and holds back. When her brothers get into a scuffle, she stands on the sidelines and scolds them rather than helping them.
Though she treats previous experiences as interesting, she does not let them prevent her from expecting a different outcome (Ne). And she does like a certain amount of stability; she misses their old home, and being around Spider, whom she has known from birth. Having him be absent feels like part of her family is missing.
Extraverted Thinking
Kiri is blunt when she explains what she would do differently to others, without thinking about how it might insult them; she tells a healer that she would use a different herb because it is better and stings less. She shows contempt for her brothers’ behavior and mocks them. She is defiant before Quaritch and tells him that her parents will “come and get him” when he threatens her life. Finally, in Fire & Ash, when she sends the water creatures after the sky people, she says, “Kill them.” Kiri may be gentle, but she has decided that sky people who threaten everything she loves don’t deserve mercy.
She doesn’t have structured thinking or need to prove her assumptions about the world, which makes it hard for her brother and father to understand her decisions.
The Enneagram 9
One thing said about 9 is that it is “part of everything,” and Kiri is a metaphorical embodiment of that concept. 9s feel connected to everything, to all life, to all ways of thinking, to every opinion and philosophy, and are reluctant to narrow them down, and this is how she acts within the story; she is literally connected to Ewya, which is the foundation of all life. Kiri feels everything, all the time; connected to the plants, animals, to other Na’vi, to her goddess, to things unseen and the deeper meaning of it all. She is quiet and peaceful, spending hours doing nothing but being absorbed in her environment. When fights break out around her, she is distressed and pleads for them to stop. Occasionally, she lashes out at her parents and stomps out of the room, only to sit beneath a tree or with her feet in the water, so she can regain her sense of self and autonomy.
Kiri is always telling her siblings to “stay calm” and “be calm,” that everything will turn out all right, even in intense situations where their lives are at stake. It troubles her she is “weird” and does not “fit in” better than she does, showing how easily others can affect her thinking about herself (an attachment core), but she does not adjust to meet their demands as a high Fi. Even in intense situations, she remains in control of herself.
The 1 Wing
That Ewya will not help them strikes her as wrong and bad; a good Mother is not evil, so Ewya absolutely can and will come to their defense. Kiri will make sure of it. She believes in this so much, she pushes through all the defenses Ewya puts up against her in the other world so that she can see her face and appeal to her mercy. Not to do so would be impossible, because she needs the world set right. This same philosophy makes her confident they can save Spider; because it is the right thing to do.
She can be cutting with those who disrupt her peace, scolding them for bad behavior or warning them that what they are doing is wrong and will earn a punishment for it (“you are going to be in so much trouble!”). Irritated with them guessing who her father might be, she tells them to stop speculating and respect her boundary, and says if their guess is right, and it’s someone she hates, she will “kill herself” from disgust.
