Aang learned how to be an airbender so easily, he forgets that it takes other people time and effort and concentration to figure out how to do it. As he helps Katara figure out how to use her earth bending skills, he talks to her about just feeling and being in the flow of things. He does not show her how to use her powers, but urges her to connect to the flow of energy in herself and locate them through that source. He is naïve and idealistic, but also devastated when he awakens after a 100 year sleep and finds that everything and everyone he has ever known has died. While he mourns them, he tries to move forward and adapt to this new existence, to the realization of himself being an Avatar, and takes on the mantle of responsibility for the rest of the world. His firm convictions and feelings drive him. Aang sees everything in emotional terms and through how he responds to it; he advocates for kindness, compassion, and gentleness wherever he goes. He is also hard on himself when he feels he has been messing around, and not doing what he should, which is to help and save people. Aang often deviates from his original mission, with the belief that he can “save everyone” – and he thinks that the second mission will still be waiting for him when he gets done with the first. He can actualize his thinking to get things done, and be decisive, but we more often see him dip into low Si. Aang is always talking about “how I was taught,” the masters from his past, his friends, how things used to be, and mourning their loss, as he tries to move on from them without unlearning the lessons they taught him.

Aang’s entire way of Airbending is to connect to his body, to the source of energy in the universe around him, and to react from the gut when he bends air, water, you name it. He teaches his friends new techniques based purely on instinct, and had a natural knack for his skills even as a small child. But he is also neglectful of his responsibilities, often tuning out in class, or wandering off, or not paying attention. He never thinks there will be any consequences for this behavior, so it devastates him to find out he cannot return to speak to his former master once her rescues his friends from the spirit realm. Aang is always cheerful and upbeat, encouraging others to look on the bright side, and expect the best out of life, but also has a strongly moralistic side. He is hard on himself for his mistakes, and feels ashamed if he lets other people down or does not live up to his standards. Aang takes being the Avatar seriously, and insists on saving as many people as he can, even when others tell him to take another path. He feels it is wrong to endanger people who take him in, and tries to protect them, but also moralizes at previous Avatars who do not want to do what is “right” and help him rescue people. Under stress, Aang seems to fall into 6ish behaviors somewhat; he relies on his teachers for expertise, rather than fully trusting his own instincts, and thinks he must be ‘taught’ things rather than to take the initiative himself.
