Katara is a very gentle, compassionate, and emotional girl, who makes decisions based on what is best for others rather than just for herself. She does not want to put others at risk with her talents, but also does not want to stand idly by and not be allowed to use those talents to protect people, so when she finds a society that won’t let women fight, she demands they change their laws to accommodate her and do what is best (and wisest, in her opinion) against the opposing army. She airs her feelings about this immediately and puts them into direct action. Katara feels it is best for her to join Aang and help him on his mission, but also encourages him to help people along the way, and does so herself. She is willing to do this even without her brother’s support, but is also grateful for it when he chooses to come along. She is a natural water-bender, but struggles to learn without being taught. Her sensor-driven methods of learning means she tries through practice, and does not immediately understand Aang’s intuitive teaching methods. She also focuses on the here and now, what is in front of her, what needs done for others, and what she can do to enrich the lives of those around her. Her lower Ne provides her with occasional insights, where she just knows she needs to go somewhere, to meet someone, or to trust someone; but she does not often question their motives or see beyond their obvious intentions. She assumes the kids in the woods are good, and do no harm, and is horrified to find out otherwise. Katara wants to understand why things happen the way they do, but does not question her own motives so much as she strives to change what she does not like.

Katara is very gentle and considerate of others’ needs and their feelings; she rushes in to help, protect, guide, or heal where she can and is eager to learn how to use her powers to stitch wounds and give others comfort. She goes out of her way to be mothering and helpful, seeing herself as supportive of whatever people need, and believes it’s the right thing to do to risk her life for Aang, or even to use her powers on behalf of total strangers. Whenever Aang drags his feet about being heroic, Katara is there to push him to help and serve and protect people, and feels angry when she’s not allowed to be at his side. She challenges an earth bender to a duel of sorts to prove herself worthy, and to show how old-fashioned and stupid the rules are about not allowing women to fight. She believes in doing what is right, even when it’s not easy; when she falls in with some people in the woods who unbeknown to her are using street terrorism tactics to scare and harm people, she stands against them and refuses to use her powers to assist in their schemes, even though it’s dangerous for her to stand up for what she believes. She often trusts her instincts and says she just ‘knows’ what the right thing to do is.
