George is opportunistic and reacts quickly. He makes decisions fast, and at times, without considering the consequences, such as when he decides to pretend to be their commanding officer, to send another officer he doesn’t respect in the wrong direction, which could have earned him severe punishment. He is quick to leap into action, seems able to adjust himself to intense situations and orient himself in the world quickly, and looks for ways to entertain himself in the outside world. He is sometimes more observant than his friends and will stop to chat with people along the way. Though he experiences a lot of trauma and horror in seeing his friends killed, blown up, or have their limbs taken by bombs, George doesn’t really talk through his feelings with other people. He keeps them all inside and rarely references them, though it’s obvious when he’s dealing with them, because he will pull away from the others and go off by himself into a corner. He doesn’t care a whit about authority, but he’s decent at taking command when he needs to, and steps up to take over the battalion when he sees the incompetence of their leader. George doesn’t waste much time on theoretical discussions.

George is always cracking jokes, pulling pranks on people, mocking their leaders with his dead-on impressions of them, and making light of serious situations in an attempt to keep himself and his fellow soldiers entertained and distracted from the horrors happening all around them. He takes nothing seriously and will often interrupt a tense moment with being funny, but also has the ability to be deeply moved and touched by things. He is incredibly loyal and brave, leaping into action to save his friends, and reassuring them when things go wrong that they are going to be okay. It disturbs him immensely to encounter the real cruelties of the world, including when he realizes a German American prisoner he just made friends with has been shot in the head.
