INTJ 1w9 Characters
Since there is not a lot of character development for Dick, it’s hard to pin down his dominant function “for sure.” The real one was likely an ISTJ, but in this series, they more often emphasize Dick’s strategic mind, his instinctual grasp of leadership and decision-making, and his reckless behavior on the front, which could indicate inferior Se opportunism. He advances fast because he’s one of the best strategists in the field, moving from a field captain to a Major in short order. Even before the war has ended, he is thinking about his future and planning what to do with it, considering a professional career in the military or moving home with his best friend to start a new life in a new career. He is able to remain calm and purpose-driven, even in intense battle situations, where he chooses men for missions based on their skill level, regardless of whether they might get killed or not. Dick often has to make tactical decisions and look the other way, and even though he cares deeply about his men and grieves whenever he loses any of them, he doesn’t let that stop him or slow him down on the front lines. He respects the chain of authority, but allows a fellow officer to fake a mission report so that none of them get killed on a fool’s errand about crossing a river at night to take German hostages. While a kind and caring man, Dick retreats often to process his own feelings alone. He does not broadcast them, ever lose his cool, or talk about how he “feels” other than to lament, “I lost another man today.” He finds quiet ways to show others his affection, such as unlocking the door to Hitler’s personal wine stores at Eagle’s Nest and giving the key to one of his friends he knows who enjoys a good bottle. As mentioned earlier, Dick can be reckless at times under fire—he tells his men not to follow until his signal, then runs across a field ahead of them throwing red smoke bombs. He reaches the top of a ditch, sees a German soldier on the other side, freezes for a minute, and then opens fire. He is able to orient himself to his environment when necessary, but shows the most pleasure in non-combat, peaceful nature landscapes such as Austria when they become an occupying force.
Enneagram: 1w9
Dick makes decisions from the gut, which makes him a good military leader because he never second-guesses his own thinking. When an officer asks him if he’s sure what he wants to do, Dick just thinks about it for a second and nods. He sometimes rushes into combat ahead of his men, willing to take on the burden of risk for himself to pave the way for them, but also demands discipline and appropriate behavior from his men. He runs such a clean unit, he can’t find anyone to discipline with latrine duty during training, so he picks people at random for the task rather than write up citations. He is principled and restrained; rather than swear and drink with the rest of the troops, he refuses and politely declines. He has a reputation for being a Quaker, even though he is not, because of his abstention. Dick admits in one episode that all he wants when the war is over is to find a quiet place to live “in peace.” He finds the noise and death and confusion of the front tiring, but also is not about to give up and go home ahead of his time, so when they conquer Europe, he requests a transfer to Japan out of a desire to serve until the end of the war.
