Speirs is rational to the point of being seen as a “psycho” by some of the men in his unit; he solves problems with his mind instead of his feelings, and has no room for people’s emotions in his decisions. He would rather tell a man not to be an idiot and go back and get some sleep when he’s sick, than risk him making a stupid mistake that could get them all killed. The way he sees it, all of them are dead already, and that takes the fear out of combat. It’s just a matter of time. The other men are shocked when Spiers does a “crazy thing” in battle, and runs out in front of gunfire to reach the other end of the line, deliver a message, and then comes back without being hit. One man says in awe that the only reason nobody shot at him was nobody could believe anyone would do something that reckless. That’s how Speirs is, though, he lives his life by the seat of his pants, leaping into action where he sees fit, and daring the entire world to take him out. He is a fair judge of character, but has almost no social skills. He is gruff and restrained.

Speirs is a tough-talking, no-nonsense kind of guy, whose idea of comforting another soldier in a battle is to tell him to relax, because he is “already dead,” and just a corpse walking around waiting to get shot. It’s the facts of the situation and he sees nothing discomforting about it. He has no respect for orders that are stupid, and a reputation for handing out cigarettes to German prisoners of war before gunning them down. When finding out there’s a potential Nazi living in Austria, he sends out his men to track him down and execute him without a trial. He respects tough decisions and leadership that is competent, but has no real interest in making friends or becoming attached to anyone. He barks orders at people and tells them off if they are “stupid.”
