Norma Bates MBTI & Enneagram | Bates Motel

ESFJ 2w3 Characters

Norma is keenly aware of all the emotions around her, and both responds to them in an approving and affirming manner (with Emma) or a disapproving manner, intended to tear down people emotionally and/or manipulate them into feeling sorry for her. She makes purely emotionally-driven decisions, both in her choice of dating partners and in her whimsical desire to follow wherever her heart leads and start up a new business in a different town. Norma has no problem addressing how she feels about any situation, and is prone to frequently irrational, emotional outbursts, either to vent her own frustration or to manipulate other people. She desperately craves love and approval, and finds it very easy to form intimate emotional connections to others. It’s impossible for Norma to separate her emotions from the situation at hand, but whenever under stress, she becomes intensely critical of everyone and everything around her. She isn’t all that rational, either when dealing with police investigations or otherwise, but is smart enough to discern the quickest, easiest method of being rid of the body and hiding the evidence. When she doesn’t understand something, she asks questions about it (inferior Ti). She is naive when faced with situations in which she has no experience (such as how long it took her to catch on to the hidden motivations behind those who chose to support her in season two). Norma is somewhat traditional in certain of her beliefs, and certainly protective of her son; family matters above all. She understands how things work in a small town and tries to act within the boundaries up to a point. Norma uses all her former experiences with her son to build up expectations of how he will act and behave in future situations. She is attentive to the details of running an inn. Her tendency to move them on a whim hints at restlessness. She has a keen ability to read the people around her, and senses their overt intentions and the ones that show as well as the threat they might be to her in the future (her immediate resistance to Emma was as a threat for Norman’s affections). Norma has “lots of ideas” about how to make the inn successful, but once the town intends to build a bypass, her hopes are all dashed and she becomes incredibly pessimistic about their situation and their future. She is very afraid of all the unknown possibilities stemming from Norman’s mental illness and unpredictable actions.

Enneagram: 2w3

Norma is an unhealthy 2 who uses manipulation to appeal to others, coming across as helpless to entice them into protecting her, defending her, standing with her in conflict, and doing whatever she says. She wants to be liked, she places great emphasis on how much she does for her boys, and shows deep anger and resentment whenever they do not seem to “appreciate” all of her sacrifices. Norma’s 3 wing makes her competitive and assertive; she is not afraid to tackle challenges, she’s hard-working and wants to see favorable results and turn a profit. She emphasizes her youthfulness and spiritedness to appeal to others, maximizing her neediness to get others to attend her needs.
