ISFJ 2w1 Characters
Norman is down to earth and attentive to his homework; he’d rather do that than go out and party with the girls. He complaints about his mother moving them so often over the years, implying a desire for a more traditional lifestyle and routine. Norman has a strong desire to connect to the past, primarily through his affection for old movies. He even prefers to dress in a style reminiscent of the 1950’s. He trusts common experience and tends to fall into repetitive patterns of behavior, including his murderous psychosis and mental blackouts. Sometimes, Norman is overcome with fear of the future. Emma pushes him to consider new ideas and possibilities; she’s the one who helps him learn to piece together things in his mind and form broad assumptions about what is really happening in town. He has a keen ability to sense whether people are trustworthy or not, and at times, when under extreme stress, can be downright impulsive (killing his father, stealing a work belt and keeping it, sneaking into a cop’s house to get it back, sleeping with a girl, etc). His entire world revolves around keeping his mother content, and building a sense of unity in the household between herself and him (and occasionally his brother). Norman adapts to whatever new situation she places him in, and is very protective of other people’s feelings; he is shocked when Norma asks Emma offensive questions about her health, and tries to smooth things over whenever Norma is upset. Her approval makes him thrive, and her disapproval sends him into an emotional meltdown. He is good at making others comfortable, and when necessary, can easily talk about his own feelings. Norman isn’t eager to move quickly, but instead wants to gather as much information as possible for taking action. He is a good student, able to quickly analyze situations and reach logical conclusions. Often, Norman has to rush in and prevent his mother from doing something foolish or irrational. He is sparing with his words and the less he knows about something, the more curious he becomes about truly understanding it (or… what actually happened).
Enneagram: 2w1
Like his mother, Norman focuses on serving and attending his family’s needs. He does things to get his mother’s approval and love, and is upset or crushed when she does not seem to appreciate him. He can lash out with resentment, become vindictive, or even violent (moving to the unhealthy side of 8) when threatened – using his aggression and demands to cow people into obedience. He wants to command other people and impress them by being authoritative and taking control. His 1 wing berates him almost constantly, by criticizing his behavior and his actions, causing him to feel shame and that he might be wicked for his sexual thoughts.
