Karl ‘Helo’ Agathon MBTI & Enneagram | Battlestar Galactica

ISFP 9w1 Characters

Dominant Introverted Feeling – a self-knowledge and a desire to live in accordance with one’s personal values: Helo is always on the moral right side of every issue, even where other characters are morally ambiguous. He always does the right thing, even when it doesn’t align with the values of those around him, such as being against Cylon genocide, loving Sharon despite knowing she is a Cylon (and not caring what anyone else says to him about her, or what it makes them think about him), and often conflicting with Lee, Adama, and Roslin, about the right course of action to take in the ongoing conflicts. He believes Baltar is more valuable than he is, so he gives up his space on the ship in an initial sacrifice, then goes about evading the Cylons and essentially living alone for months until Sharon finds him, and Starbuck rescues them. After being sentenced to death for saving Sharon from a rapist, Helo does not regret his decision and only wishes he had it to do over again. He just plain won’t do things he disagrees with, and rather than try to convince other people to see his point of view, will absent himself from the situation. His own mistakes, though, tear him up inside; he’s devastated to learn Boomer has deceived him, slept with him, and taken off with their child, in a betrayal of Sharon.

Auxiliary Extroverted Sensing – acting on one’s feelings through living in the moment and hands-on learning: He makes all of his decisions based in the moment, which includes giving up his seat on the rescue flight, attacking Sharon’s attackers, and being an excellent pilot. Helo rushes into battle with no reservations about whether he can handle the situation; he just assumes that he can do it, and he is often resourceful and quick to respond. He also takes a lot of things at face value, and does not look beneath the surface of them, initially falling for Sharon’s stories and then being shocked to discover she is a Cylon agent. Helo has loved Sharon for a long time, and when she starts sex, he simply gives into it, questioning nothing about the situation or her reversal of feelings. He also believes what his own two eyes show him after their baby’s death, rather than to assume something happened behind the scenes and/or that they are being lied to by their superior officers.

Tertiary Introverted Intuition – specific insights and premonitions, and a singular state of mind: Once in awhile, Helo will say something about how he has a ‘bad feeling’ about this, or doesn’t trust it. He trusts and relies on his own instincts about people and situations, including whether or not he deems them trustworthy or not. Everyone believes Sharon is a traitor, but Helo knows she is a good person and stands by her. He believes in the best for their child.

Inferior Extroverted Thinking – blunt and irritated by incompetence when under stress or overly focused on “the facts”: Helo rarely reaches a point where he is mean to anyone, but he can assertively tell people off about the lack of morality of their decisions when the situations become bad enough. He can be blunt if surprised, but most of the time decides things based on what seems rational to him. For example, he has the low Te ability to distinguish between human value—he knows some people are worth more than others in a technical and useful sense, and he judges Baltar (“one of the greatest minds of our time”) to be more useful to the existing Fleet than himself, a mere petty officer.

Enneagram: 9w1

Enneagram 9 – desires freedom from others’ influences, by going along with them and being tolerant, until it matters not to: Helo is actually a very gentle and peaceful person. He tries to diffuse tenson and make sure things are “okay” between himself and others, before he takes aggressive action. When Chief has a problem with him and Sharon’s relationship, Helo tries to make peace with him, and reassures him he did not move in on her out of respect for their relationship. He and Chief wind up trading blows, but Helo mostly allows his friend to take out his frustrations on him, doing no damage to him in return. He is peaceful, mind-mannered, and good-natured.

1 wing brings in a desire for moral rightness and perfection: But also militantly moral, and can be moralistic on the rare occasion he tells someone off for being cruel or inhumane. Helo does not need others to support or stand with him in his decisions, because he knows they are right according to his own inner moral compass. He refuses to change his mind on certain matters, because they have become a sense of principle. Even his desire to not hit on Sharon is out of respect for Chief’s feelings for her; his sense of moral duty toward others would not allow him to take advantage of the situation. He tries hard to be a dutiful husband and father, and beats himself up when he makes mistakes or misjudgments of character.
