After Mr. Tulkinghorn’s murder, Mr. Bucket practically moves into his office, and there, does a lot of sensory-based investigating. He asks questions, he sits behind his desk, touches his blotter, examines what he can see from the window, even samples his wine. He wants to get a feel for what this person felt, did, saw, and what might have happened to him. Bucket figures out that Esther and Lady Dedlock are related because there is a slight resemblance between them and shared mannerisms (minor details that everyone else glosses over). He is picky about collecting evidence and wants to take his time and not get anything wrong. His desire to be thorough keeps him in the office much longer than anyone expects, and exasperates the secretary working there, since he automatically uses all available resources, from pinches of snuff when out gathering facts to drinking up all the wine on the sideboard.
He builds his case from observed facts, past patterns, in-depth questions about everyone who might have been involved, and noticing what does not fit the evidence. He tracks everyone’s moves, time lines, and habits, by remembering who was where and by reconstructing their movements. He wants to know what actually happened, and in the process, builds a solid case against the murderer.
Bucket is efficient, procedural, and results-oriented. Even if he suspects who did it, he knows his evidence has to hold up in a court of law, so he has to prove it beyond any doubt. He sets up the murderer to reconstruct the event, by manipulating her into thinking she is implicating the person she impersonated to frame for her crime, and then exposing the truth about her. This lets him gather evidence to build his case. He also questions others with intent, wanting to know the facts and to follow up on them. He has a methodical way of approaching the murder, in which he gathers information and reasons out loud, often not finishing his internal thoughts and causing confusion in others.
He can be tactless at times, though he tries not to be (telling Esther the first place they look for people is in the river, then the morgue, then hospitals). Despite this, however, Bucket has no desire to hurt anyone’s feelings. Faced with arresting a dying man, he tries to soothe him and convince him to get better, just to give Mr. Tulkinghorn trouble. He has empathy for Joe, and feels for Esther, but does not allow his own feelings or experiences to impact his assessment of the case.
When one lead runs into a dead end, Bucket picks another one, but rather than leading with multiple possibilities, he gathers information to eliminate suspects and keeps his true suspicions under wraps until he can expose the person he knows is responsible.

Bucket has a calm and composed manner about him, and remains unruffled and stoic on the outside even when other people are losing their temper around him. He doesn’t enjoy conflict, but has a moralistic streak to him (those who do wrong, deserve to be arrested for it). Bucket kind of seeps into spaces and fills them, diffusing the intense energy and not picking up on others’ signals (as an INTP) – he likes comfort and routine and to do things at an unhurried pace, which at times exasperates the people around him.
