Akemi MBTI & Enneagram | Blue Eye Samurai

ESFP 3w2 Characters

Akemi at first seems like a spoiled, pampered princess, who is impulsive in everything she does; she chooses a man her father might not approve of, falls in love with him, and sleeps with him before the wedding, only to have him “ruined” and then chase after him, with no real plan other than to find him. Seki has to go along with her, to keep her safe. But Akemi is good at adapting to her circumstances and being pragmatic when it suits her; she poses as a high priced courtesan and insists a man take her around to all the brothels (searching for Taigen or Mizu), until she “sells herself” to one to get the chance to poison Mizu. She is also changeable in her emotions, and takes things at face value—after her fiancé kills a bird she just released from its cage, when he sends her two more birds and her servants give her the wrong impression, she storms into his chamber to slap him across the face. Upon finding out he meant no harm by it, she immediately becomes sympathetic to him, compassionate toward his stammer, and makes him feel good about himself. A lot of the story hinges on her Fi refusal to adhere to the traditions of her proper place. She doesn’t want to marry the man her father chooses for her and runs away; she back-talks him; she has her heart set on someone else. Akemi can be kind and considerate, and has a desire to serve, but has to overcome her desperate and fierce desire to be true to herself first. She often uses her lower Te pragmatism to push back, to make deals, to be ruthless, but also lacks much Ni. She is shocked to find out her father is a traitor, she takes a lot of things at face value, and she never thinks about the long-term consequences of posing as a courtesan (that she might run into some of these men later at court, or that she might actually wind up serving in a brothel and having no freedom anymore).

Enneagram: 3w2

Akemi wants to be “great,” and has ambitions for herself, but is also highly adaptable to whatever situation she finds herself in, and able to blend in, make an impression, or show self-confidence that others lack (“nobody refuses me!”). She also struggles at times to separate what she wants for her life from what others think she should have—or too much “adapting” to succeed in her environment (despite being super opinionated and resistant to compromising her personal ethics). Seki has to tell her at the end of his life that he raised her, and hopes to one day see her rule Japan, which then gives her a goal to work toward. Akemi is very successful in everything she sets out to do, including negotiating with a Madam for information, a place, and a chance to get to Mizu. She can show a pleasing and appealing side as well, in her desire to comfort other people and be liked. Her heart gets set on Taigen, and she thinks of herself as his champion, supporter, and his ticket to greatness, only for her to realize he does not want that life for himself and change her mind, returning to her husband, since she will have a chance at power.
