Freddie is a man looking for opportunities. When he sees a band needs a new member, he wastes no time in putting himself forward. He pushes them in their record deals. He energizes the crowd through his larger than life personality and flair. Freddie wants to push boundaries in every way, and does not always think through his decisions – when their music video “in drag” backfires, he’s angry about the fall out. Freddie also tends to self-medicate through constant activity and stimulation. He finds it so hard to be alone, he calls his ex and begs her to come over. His lifestyle of rock and roll includes “living high.” Freddie sometimes delves into strange, surreal Ni-ish music, including his famed song which is “nine minutes long.” He does not believe in boundaries. Instead, Freddie wants to subvert music and make it into something more. He is a consummate performer, able to respond to the audience and get them fired up on stage. Freddie also actively looks for and needs the support of his fans, friends, and family. As one of them says, he needs others to approve of him, and he is “afraid of being alone.” He is free with his feelings for his lovers. Freddie can be blunt and authoritative, pushing through his ideas with a stubborn resilience, and sometimes is too caught up in his own feelings to be considerate of others. He hangs out his band to dry by leaving them to make a name for himself as a solo singer, refuses to compromise on his vision for their music, and puts their manager in his place several times. Freddie struggles to let go of his girlfriend and give her the space to be involved with other people, framing her in the context of what she means to him. but he also plays to the crowd. He also seems to see himself as representing a group of marginalized and misunderstood people (“We’re four misfits who don’t belong together. We’re playing for other misfits. And the outcasts right in the back of the room, we’re pretty sure they don’t belong either. We belong to them.”)

Freddie has a larger than life, unapologetic persona, in that he goes directly after what he wants and expects others to give it to him. He has grandiose ideas about his potential for fame, fortune, and popularity, which can rub people the wrong way, but it also allows him to stand up for what he wants and refuse to accept any substitutes. He has the idea that if you don’t like him, that’s your problem. In his personal life, he is often hedonistic, pursuing whatever attracts or interests him, and burying his true feelings under his addictions, his desire to have the best of everything, and his need for a lifestyle full of pleasure, distraction, and parties. His aggression and devil-may-care attitude ticks off his agent at the record company, because he is never willing to compromise on his artistic vision. For a while, Freddie strikes out on his own, alienating all of his band mates in the process, out of a desire to seek his own fame and fortune, and it takes a lot for him to come back, rejoin them for a charity event, and to make nice with them. He struggles to admit when he is wrong or to apologize in plain terms.
