Fairlight sees things in ways others do not; she often has ‘visions’ or ‘dreams’ that she believes if she follows, they will lead her to something good, such as when she has dreams about persimmons and finds a whole bunch of them, enough for everyone to eat, save, or sell over Thanksgiving. She also has bad dreams, such as in the episode Second Sight where she becomes obsessed with screaming trees and something bad is coming but she isn’t sure what (it turns out to be a lumber mill threatening to take her sister away from her). Fairlight informs Christy that she knew they would be friends even before she arrived, as she saw her in a dream. She asks her husband not to spend all his money on a rented wagon to sell his honey, when they could save up and buy their own, and have a real business. Fairlight knows how others think and has insights into how they are feeling; she talks to John about his feelings for Bessy, and allows him to air them, without judgment and by talking about what it feels like to be in love or have your heart broken. She knows Christy has deeper feelings for Neil than she admits to, and that John “touches something deep inside” Christy, implying that she’s not wholly innocent when Bessy accuses her of having feelings for a teenager. Fairlight will often make the first move, before her neighbors do, in showing kindness to others, accepting a new way of doing things, or agreeing to sell her quilt to rich folk to fill her children’s bellies. She has an FJ way of getting through to people, using kindness, persuasion, and saying what they need to hear in the way they will accept it, a trait which Christy envies since it’s so often successful. She knows how to get men to listen to her, by appealing to their masculine pride, by giving room for their feelings, by allowing her daughter growing pains (but also asking for respect). Fairlight is quick to share her own feelings, but also wants to understand others, their points of views, and what is going on around her. She occasionally takes risks, without concern for what could happen as a result, with her low Se.

Fairlight is the most open-minded and tolerant person Christy meets in the Cove, always gentle, compassionate, and looking for non-intrusive ways to convince people to see things in a new light. She warns Christy against trying to argue Neil into doing anything and suggests she fix him a nice meal and sweet-talk him instead. After Bird’s Eye threatens people who send their kids to the school, Fairlight chooses to escort her kids there anyway, to show people that she’s not afraid and that threats shouldn’t get in the way of “schoolin’.” She has a gentle spirit and easily soothes people and knows how to get them to accept things. From time to time, Fairlight shows 1 wing stubbornness on matters of principle. Her husband is gone longer than usual on a trip and rather than let her kids starve, she agrees to work at the Mission for pay. Fairlight faints because she won’t take more food than is owed, and gives it all to her kids. When her husband comes home and demands she get back to work on the homestead, she tells him she gave the Mission her word and refuses to compromise or go back on it. She angrily tells him that she doesn’t consider his pride greater than the food in her children’s stomachs, but later makes up with him and says she didn’t like there being bad feelings between them. Sometimes, Fairlight dips into 6ish fretting about her loved ones, the feeling that something is wrong, and worrying about the future, but the moment passes and finds her optimistic again.
