Gabrielle Solis, played by Eva Longoria on the hit TV series Desperate Housewives, is one of the most entertaining and complex examples of an ESTP personality type in television. Known for her beauty, confidence, ambition, and love of luxury, Gabrielle is often dismissed as simply vain or selfish—but her MBTI type as an ESTP and Enneagram type as a 7w8 reveal a much deeper character. Her quick thinking, ability to adapt under pressure, competitive nature, and determination to maintain her independence explain both her strengths and her flaws. In this character analysis, we’ll explore Gabrielle Solis’s MBTI type, cognitive functions, and Enneagram 7w8 motivations through detailed examples.

Extraverted Sensing

ESTPs live for the moment through their extraverted sensing; it feels wrong to them not to take opportunities that arise, because they want to live to the fullest and experience life in tangible ways. And that defines Gaby’s behavior.
- When we first meet Gaby, she’s sleeping with a teenage boy behind her husband’s back, sneaking him in and out of the house in broad daylight, hooking up in the garage, and even sneaking over to his parents’ house and leaving before his mom gets home from the store. He is underage, which means she could go to prison, but Gaby was bored, lonely, and unfulfilled, because Carlos was giving her pretty things but not enough attention. And the boy mowing her lawn was hot, so why not? She has to, several times, improvise on the spot to get out of this, when her husband comes home unexpectedly and almost catches them.
- Several seasons later, after divorcing Carlos, Gaby starts dating a senator who is going through a bad divorce. His wife has left a bunch of gorgeous, expensive clothes in his closet until she finds a place to store them. When Gaby asks to borrow one, after a water leak ruined all of her clothes, and he says no, she decides to steal an armload. She sneaks her way into his house by telling the maid she just wants to use the bathroom, then puts on as many outfits as she can under her coat, and wears one of them to an event, where his wife confronts her about it and leaves her half-naked in the restroom.
- As a teenager, after her stepfather assaulted her, Gaby ran away from home, became a model, and got good gigs. She then impulsively gave that up to marry Carlos, but when his life is “boring,” she looks for pleasure and fun in other ways, by purchasing expensive clothes and cars, going shopping constantly, and resisting the idea of having kids since it would place restrictions on her.
- Because Gaby believes in living in the moment, the idea that Bree would wait to get married before having sex is insane to her. She argues that you wouldn’t buy a car without test driving it, and she primarily judges and wants things based on how beautiful, sexy, or expensive they are. A few times, this leads to misunderstandings or her being involved with the wrong kinds of men, who buy her off with pretty things only for her to find out that they aren’t who she thought they were (one of them is a seventeen year old, who argues that she has had sex with a minor before; why not him?).
- Lastly, she becomes physical in arguments, hitting Carlos, breaking walls, throwing vases, and destroying the artwork and furniture he loves in the divorce.
Introverted Thinking
ESTPs look for ways to hack situations to their advantage and get what they want out of a situation through logical reasoning, which Gaby is good at, even though it sometimes alienates others.
- When she finds out from her husband Carlos that his mother-in-law has a gambling problem, Gaby takes her to a casino on purpose so that she will gamble all afternoon, then makes an excuse to sneak off and spend the day with her lover. When her MIL reaches a credit limit on one of Carlos’s cards, Gaby then says she will sell some of her jewelry and pay it off, and it will be “our little secret.” Earlier in the episode, she got her MIL arrested for shoplifting to pull the same disappearing act.
- She has an argument for all of her behaviors, which dismisses moral arguments against them. When Susan confronts her about this affair, and says that it will hurt Carlos by talking about how much it hurt when her husband cheated on her, Gaby says Susan makes every situation about herself and it has nothing to do with her, that this is an entirely different situation. She also pays off a baby mama for the rights to her child, then kidnaps the child from the hospital when the teenage father tries to take it from them.
- Gaby is surprised when others do not treat sex as “casual” because to her, it fills a physical need, and she assumes she can replace one lover with another one without getting emotionally entangled. She is shocked and made uncomfortable when John says that he loves her, and he thinks he can provide for her, and points out that there is no way that he can take care of her and make enough money to keep her happy. (Carlos is rich and successful, even if he winds up going to prison for fraud, and John mows lawns for $15 an hour.)
Extraverted Feeling
ESTPs use extraverted feeling to express their emotional needs and to use persuasion to appeal to other people, get along with them, or convince them to go along with their agenda.
- Gaby cares a lot more than she will admit about not looking bad in other people’s eyes, which causes her to conceal anything she does not want them to know. She needs them to think she is successful, so she tries to lie to her former modeling friends about how great her life is, even when it is falling apart. When her friends find her working in a shopping mall, she pretends she is trying to buy shoes and felt like wearing a glamorous gown.
- She tries to talk her way out of being held responsible for her actions, and if that fails, she will pretend to have more intense emotions than she actually feels by crying or being “charming.” She also punishes Carlos by doing things to upset him, like pretending to have amazing sex while they are separated, and destroying things he cares about in front of him. This is unfortunately unhealthy low Fe behavior: I need you to emotionally react to me, so I will go out of my way to hurt you.
Introverted Intuition
Since this is a weak function, ESTPs are rarely aware of the consequences of their actions in the present, or give any weight to the need to plan for the future, except when it feels threatened.
- Gaby does a lot of things without thinking that they could backfire: she seduces a teenager and assumes she won’t get caught, she cheats on a husband that she is afraid of, she blackmails her mother-in-law and sets her up to reignite her gambling addiction, and she only worries about her long-term security and comfort when Carlos goes to prison. Then, she offloads their expensive toys and gifts by hiding them in the houses of her friends, so the government won’t seize her assets.
The Enneagram 7

Enneagram 7s want to avoid pain through chasing after pleasure and fun, and struggle to deny themselves what they want, because it seems within their power to get it.
- Early on, someone asks Gaby what she wants most out of life, and she says, “to be happy,” to which he replies that it is a childish thing to want. But that is what she runs after, all the time, with most of her decisions: happiness. To feel desired, loved, envied, to have everything she wants: amazing sex, gorgeous clothes, nice furniture, to take a luxurious bubble bath with her lover. Even having an affair is thrilling because it’s wrong and she could get caught, which makes it exciting.
- Gaby does not want children because she thinks it will impede her freedom and impose limits on her. She does not want to get fat, be pregnant, be stuck in bed, get up in the middle of the night to change diapers, or deal with a screaming kid. When she temporarily has custody of a baby, she passes off most of the responsibilities to her Chinese immigrant underpaid employee, while taking all the good things about being a mom to heart (“aww, she’s so cute in her little outfit!”).
- 7s rationalize away their bad behavior by reframing it in a positive light, and Gabby does this by saying she was owed an affair because Carlos neglected her, and she is beautiful, and has needs to fill. She looks for loopholes and ways to exploit situations to her advantage, including being faux-sympathetic when finding out a woman has been a slave, and offering her a job in her own house, doing the same sorts of things for Gaby. She sees this as being “nice” and “opening her home,” and helping her form a new life, when in reality it’s just because Gaby wants cheap labor.
The 8 Wing
7w8s are mostly good natured, but also unapologetic about taking what they want, and can be vindictive when crossed.
- Gaby rarely self-shames for anything the way a 7w6 might, and instead, doubles down when people tell her no. She steals things, she lies to the police, she destroys private property, she blackmails people to get what she wants or pays them off, and she becomes aggressive and territorial about her property. When she cheats on Carlos, it’s fine, because she has needs, but when he cheats on her, she engages in a vicious divorce in which she wants to take everything from him, then is furious when he cons her into one last fling by pretending he has a well-paying job lined up in the pipeline. He did it to prove that she will do anything for money, which enrages her, because he found and exploited a weakness she didn’t admit she had.
