Dominant Introverted Thinking – striving to understand how things work to hack existing systems: Tris quietly assesses situations and takes the logical, detached approach – even if it means shooting someone under mind control (she feels bad about it, but it has to be done to protect herself and the person she cares about). She rationally figures out how to control her environment inside the mind tests, and manages to conceal her thought process from the higher-ups, which is more than anyone else has done in the training (she’s told she has to slow down and take longer to solve her tests, or they’ll become suspicious that she is Divergent). Tris questions everything, and sees logical opportunities that others miss, whether it’s in a game of find the flag or a life and death situation. She abandons her old life because she is so bored with it for Dauntless, knowing full well that if she fails, she will be Factionless and left to fend for herself on the street.
Auxiliary Extroverted Sensing – acting on what exists by living in the moment and hands-on learning: Once there, she quickly adapts to her environment, learns to fight, takes enormous risks, and gets a thrill out of dangerous situations, including zip-lining and chasing after trains. Tris is opportunistic, good at noticing possibilities to act within her environment and both seizing these chances, and encouraging others to grab them too. She is the first person to throw herself into the unknown, and learns by doing—she chases after trains, learns to fight, and doesn’t back down from a challenge even when the other kids are much bigger and meaner than she is. The more practice she gets, the more Tris feels confident that she can handle anything thrown at her, and she proves it by being a smart, opportunistic-minded person in combat. Once she decides how she feels about Four, she acts on it and they become lovers (who knows if we’ll even be alive tomorrow?).
Tertiary Introverted Intuition – specific insights and premonitions, and a singular state of mind: Without much effort, Tris finds the loopholes in the mental tests; she is able to sense the purpose of the test and what it intends to highlight in her process, and figure out ways around it, to break through the hallucinations to exit the other side. She has an intuitive sense about her environment and the potential in other people, as well is able to guess their motivations. Her “gut instinct” is rarely wrong.
Inferior Extroverted Feeling – an awkwardness around emotions and little desire to meet others’ expectations: After shooting someone in the head, Tris is more worried about how the boy’s girlfriend is going to take it than herself; she continually has an inner monologue about what an awful person she is, for caring so little about other people and doing them harm. She measures herself against her mother, and other people whose behavior she admires, and finds herself lacking. In short, Tris has an objective system of self-evaluation, based on her behavior being “amoral” in certain situations, dependent on what it requires from her.

Enneagram 6 – a humble, loyal, kind individual who questions everything in a desire to understand it: Tris struggles at first to know whether she should follow her heart and choose Dauntless, or if she should stay at home in her faction with her pacifist parents because they expect it from her; she feels obligated to them, but also has to break free and live her own life. Even so, in choosing Dauntless she is pursuing community, a place to belong, which is what every 6 wants from life. She wants to go to Dauntless, but is hesitant to alienate her family in the process; ultimately she has to go with her heart and learns to adapt very quickly. Like all counter-phobic 6s, Tris is all about proving herself to others, challenging them, being tough, and showing everyone that she isn’t afraid, when actually, she is looking for somewhere to belong. She frequently steps up and confronts her fears, by being the first person to jump into the unknown, to take on others, etc. Tris is doubtful of the government and their intentions, is worried about what will become of her family, and does everything in her power to protect them. She is curious about Four and probes him for information.
7 wing brings in a sense of fun, humor, and laughter, or avoidance of pain through mental distractions and adventures: Tris has a rebellious, adrenaline-seeking side that prompts her to take risks, throw herself off cliffs, and be assertive under pressure. She doesn’t want to be stuck in her boring life in a faction where nothing ever happens, so she takes a literal leap of faith and goes out to find a satisfying life. It’s hard and scary, but she finds the self-confidence and determination to survive by being smart, thinking positive about her own potential, and being open to the fun and pleasures of living a life of high-adrenaline.
