Frank Churchill MBTI & Enneagram | Emma

ENTP 3w4 Characters

It’s obvious Frank is an ETP type, but I wasn’t sure which one at first, and mistook him for an ESTP. But… an ESTP would act first, think later, and Frank is busy “scheming” throughout the story of Emma. He is promising Jane a future they cannot have yet, in favor of running away with her and getting married (which is what they both desire), because he does not want to lose his inheritance. Thus, he needs to wait until his aunt dies to make his intentions for Jane known. At other portions of the story, he tells Emma all about how he plans to travel abroad, how he wants to get as far away from England as possible, etc. Frank is always dreaming and thinking about his future. He is impractical as well, giving Jane a piano much too big for her aunt’s apartment (low sensing). Frank is an apt judge of character and finds it easy to manipulate people to his advantage—he keeps up the farce about Dixon and Jane to mislead Emma and make her suspect a romantic attachment between them. He flirts with her to throw his father and Mrs. Weston off the scent. He instinctively knows what to say, to make Emma feel like he is on her side, in Miss Bates being intolerable. But Frank frequently screws up things, because of his poor detail retention; on a walk outside Emma’s home with a group, he tells them something he learned from “Mrs. Weston” when in reality it came from Jane, and almost gives away their secret correspondence (Jane told him that, and only Jane could have known it); he quickly tries to cover this up by changing the subject. And as desirous of a bright future as Frank is, he still has some attachment to his hometown and to the people in it, as low Si users are wont to do. Frank is rational but not always kind, because of his abuse of his Fe function. He knows without his aunt’s approval and money, without catering to her every whim, she will cut him off completely and then he won’t see a cent of her massive fortune. So even though he is in love with Jane, Frank pretends he isn’t—to keep his fingers on the purse strings. He often sets out, only to turn about and return to his aunt’s side and cater to her every whim, simply to keep her happy. But in the process, he uses Emma to conceal his secret, hurting Jane and misleading Emma; as Emma points out, he couldn’t know that she wouldn’t fall in love with him. He conspires with her, flirts openly with her in front of Jane, confides false feelings in her, and leads her on. Frank also vents with his feelings, but doesn’t care who he hurts in the process—everyone is vain and shallow and he hates his aunt and it ruined the party because Jane left! He makes a fool out of Emma at the picnic, and grumbles about other people being boring and insipid right in front of them. He finds it hard to conceal his feelings, becoming moody, petulant, and cross with Emma and her friends, and covering up his frustrations with Jane by complaining about the heat and complaining about his aunt’s illness.

Enneagram: 3w4

Frank can easily become whatever others expect him to be—to his aunt, a doting and devoted nephew willing to cater to her every whim; for Jane, a passionate lover who gives her pianos but is quite careless about and with her feelings; to Emma, a conspirator who comes up with evidence to support her theories; to his father, a nice young man. The only person who sees right through him is Mr. Knightley, who finds him pompous, shallow, selfish, and vain. Frank can be so eager to promote Jane, he risks tiring her out by demanding she perform at length for them (thus impressing all gathered with her piano skills). His 4 wing is moody, resentful, and petulant, causing him to become very ‘poor company indeed.’ He doesn’t like most people and finds them pathetic, boring, or shallow. He can also be reactive, self-absorbed, and inconsiderate of others’ feelings in favor of his own.
