Father Brown MBTI & Enneagram | Father Brown

INFJ 1w9 Characters

Father Brown not only cares about figuring out who committed the crime, but attempting to save their soul as well. He wants them to come to confession, so their death is not “eternal,” and he approaches his mysteries from the lens of figuring out the people involved in the crime. He tries to find patterns in their behavior, and often has a hunch he cannot explain and does not share with anyone, until he can find the proof.

Sin and injustice bother him, as does the fallout of a murder, which affects everyone in the household in a negative way. How he learns the truth is often through engaging with people and their feelings, and by adjusting his approach to match how they want to talk to him. With some people, he is much more gentle and kind, whereas with others, who he discerns are more hostile toward faith or evil, he is more confrontational and aggressive in telling them they need to repent, or that they did a horrible thing. Many times, he wants people to take accountability for their actions and to confess, rather than him needing to expose them; he expects them to be ‘humane’ and prioritizes their repentance over their punishment.

He does have a good thinking function; he constantly asks questions, goes at them from unique angles, and wants to understand why things happened as much as how and when they happened. What caused this person to do such a horrible thing, what does it tell me about them, and what does it say about their eternal soul? Knowing that, how can I reach them and encourage them to confess?

He has an appreciation for small pleasures (fine wine, good food, a beautiful garden) but can also unknowingly put himself at risk. Several times, he confronts murderers in ways that could get him killed (shoved off a church roof, run down in the street, shot in the head) because he considers it more important to hold them to justice than to be aware of his environment.

Enneagram: 1w9

Father Brown has a strong sense of right and wrong, based on his own moral principles and on the values he holds from the Church. This makes him confront murderers about the nature of their eternal soul, because he does not want them to perish and go to hell unrepentant. He frames justice in spiritual terms, has a clear sense of right and wrong, and is willing to correct others… but he does it in a polite way, that invites them to “do the right thing” voluntarily, because he does not want to force them to confess. He is so disturbed by evil and murder that he has to do something about it, by solving the crime and seeing to it that the person responsible faces justice.

His 9 wing, however, is quite active. He will back out of the room or disappear when other people are in the midst of an argument, rather than get sucked into it. He has no super strong identifiable opinions, but openly accepts and tolerates others except on matters of principles. For the most part, he fades into the background, encourages others to get along, and remains nonjudgmental of his friends. He always urges people to do the right thing, and to confess their sins, but doesn’t force his beliefs on them.
