Tyra lives in the moment and didn’t assume she could have anything more for her life until Tami put ideas in her head; before then, she wasn’t very interested in academics and then she starts working hard, learning to master math, etc. She is opportunistic, throwing herself into whatever she is doing, climbing in and out of boys’ windows to see them, shoplifting, and falling in and out of love. Tyra is mostly internal with her emotions; she tells no one she was raped, and doesn’t want to bother her mother with it, until Landry persuades her to talk to Tami about it. She tends to cut guys off based on when she feels through with them, and they have to persuade her to listen to their side. It’s hard for her to locate her feelings at times, such as when she isn’t sure whether she loves Landry or not, enough to take him away from another girl (she does realize she loves him and asks him to give her a second chance). Her Te is pretty blunt at times, but also business-driven. She tells her mother to get over her loser boyfriend, he wasn’t worth it; she says she doesn’t want to wind up a stripper like her sister and mother when she gets out of school, and is upset with Tami for giving her dreams that are ‘out of my reach’ after the vice principle shames her for aiming too high. Tyra doesn’t think much about the future until she gets older; she is somewhat rational in how she and Landry dispose of the body, but doesn’t want him to take all the blame since it would wreck his future.

Tyra is an interesting blend of strong boundaries and permissiveness; she easily stands up for herself and is very assertive, using whatever techniques she thinks will win her the class presidency (she brings strippers to school and tells people if they want to get laid, they need her to handle the prom). Tyra takes a baseball bat to her mom’s boyfriend after he slaps her across the face, and tells her mom if she invites that jerk back, she’s leaving—which means her mom doesn’t, and keeps Tyra instead. She says she’s glad her rapist wound up dead, because he deserved it and she doesn’t want to think about him anymore. But she’s also amenable; she tells Tim he can crash on the couch for two nights when he has nowhere to go, but only for that long; then she kicks him out for making eyes at her mom and sister. Tyra has a soft spot for Landry and warms up to him, after dismissing him and his feelings. She cuts off things with her cowboy boyfriend when she thinks he fathered a child and has neglected child support, but welcomes him back when she finds out the truth. And she doesn’t like to be in the middle of family drama, her own or anyone else’s.
