Hans is excellent at discerning the emotions of other people, and manipulating them to his own advantage. He quickly reads the emotions of the room and adapts to them; this enables him to be very good at offering encouragement, affirmation, giving the impression of falling in love, and responding to Anna’s needs. He is personable, charming, outgoing, comfortable with leadership, and able to offer sound advice that appeals to others on an emotional level (“don’t become the monster they think you are!”). He comes to the kingdom with a plan that involves marrying the heir to the throne, and allows nothing to stand in his way. He is careful in his scheming, but it still works toward a long-term, ultimate goal that, if Elsa had been without magic, would have required a long-term investment: marriage, then waiting a suitable amount of time to “kill off” the sisters, and claim the throne for himself. Everything very nearly works out just the way he planned it! His ability to seize opportunities for action show in his quick flip from Elsa (“nobody was getting anywhere with her”) to Anna, based on her interest in him. Hans is quick to step into a leadership role and respond to crisis situations as they come, revising his schemes along the way. He’s a bit of an adventure seeker, willing to plunge off into the snow on a daring “rescue mission,” climb rooftops, etc. He also has a thing for wealth and opulence. Because he isn’t emotionally involved with anyone other than himself, Hans is an excellent schemer who analyzes situations as they happen and turns them to his advantage. He has some brutally critical (but honest) things to say to Anna about her neediness.
