Kirk Gleason’s MBTI type has become a fascinating topic among fans of Gilmore Girls. Portrayed by Sean Gunn, Kirk displays the hallmark traits of an ENFP personality, combined with the restless, high-energy nature of an Enneagram 6w7. From his endless string of odd jobs to his socially awkward but deeply earnest interactions, Kirk’s behavior reflects a unique blend of curiosity, anxiety, and personal conviction that makes him one of the show’s most unforgettable characters.

Extraverted Intuition

Kirk has had about 60 jobs and never stays with one very long. In almost every episode, he shows up doing something unusual and has to explain to Rory or Lorelai what his new task is; he has been a mailman, a dog walker, into real estate, sold original beauty products, an inspector, a salesperson, been a bean counter, etc. He treats his life like a series of experiments rather than a stable path.
Each time, Kirk gets excited about his new job or hobby, throws himself into it completely, and then abandons it the second something else catches his fancy, as if the earlier job never existed. This is pure Ne in motion, always cycling through ideas in search of something novel and new.
Kirk also has an unrealistic view of his own expectations and limitations, often volunteering for things he is unqualified for, out of the belief he can just learn everything about it and “wing it” on the job. Whenever he does performance art in public, his concepts are always weird, hard to understand, and heavily symbolic, such as dressing up as a mime and acting out his life thus far, including being born.
Introverted Feeling
Kirk Gleason is not explicitly written as autistic, but many of his behaviors (such as difficulty with social cues, reliance on routines, and intense focus) lead viewers to interpret him as autistic-coded
He has deep emotional investments in very specific things, such as his need to get a girlfriend and his social awkwardness in how he goes about it. Kirk has no sense of how he is coming across to others, whether he is being appropriate, or if he is over-sharing, so he just bluntly states what he hopes to achieve and tries to push through his own agenda. He does things like announcing that his girlfriend finds him desirable and inserting that into every situation, taking dates extremely seriously in a ceremonial manner (and trying to plan for every possibility with Ne/Te; what if this happens, and that happens, and then we want to go back to my room, but we can’t because my mother is there; would you rent me your apartment, Luke?). He has a strong attachment to his mother and does not want to disappoint her, but fails to realize that their bond is weird and sometimes inappropriate given his age.
Kirk also makes decisions and demands based on what feels right to him, rather than what makes sense to other people. This stems from a Fi-ish sense of “this matters to me, so it SHOULD matter to everyone else” – one example is that he is planning a perfect first date, and he wants Luke to change everything to suit his agenda. He wants flowers on the table, for it to be reserved, can it be moved away from where it is, can you serve us a special menu? His own desires override Luke’s cranky “it stays the way it is” until he argues him into the ground.
Extroverted Thinking

When Kirk can’t wear someone down with an argument, he will pivot to offering money instead, since money makes the world go around and will work when all else fails; if I offer you $25, will you hold the table, give me that part in the play, etc.? How about $50? $100? While played for comedic effect, Kirks’ bargaining is a core part of his personality and one way he irritates people, because he won’t take no for an answer.
His efforts to organize his life often fall into “too much” territory; he over-thinks his date and tries to arrange every detail, to the extent that he leaves no more room for spontaneity. A stressed ENFP can fall into a low Te desire for structure and control. He also devolves into creating systems, rules, or plans, that he expects others to follow without questioning (and sometimes will use a bull horn to announce these things). It annoys him to show up with a plan, expect others to execute it without any questions, and meet resistance from people who see his demands as too much work. He can be weirdly managerial about things that don’t matter to anyone else, or insist on negotiating for a job that no one has offered to him. (He tries to work at the inn, until Lorelai has to kick him out.)
Kirk very literal in many ways and doesn’t coach his language in softening terms, such as when he tells Lorelai her house might fall in due to the termites he found under the porch, and he’d rather not stand there in case it collapses.
Introverted Sensing
Kirk likes novelty and to experiment, but does not love meaningful change; he stays with his mom, because he has yet to give up his childhood attachments. It takes him a long time to decide to get a girlfriend, find an apartment, and move out to start his own life, and others have to encourage him to do those things.
He overdoes the details when he feels anxious, which means trying to account for every detail and not knowing which ones are more important; planning out every thing in his first date with Lulu is a combination of Ne looking for possibilities, Te trying to organize structure, and fretting over possible Si details that he may not have foreseen.
The Enneagram 6

Originally, I thought he might have been a 9w8, but he’s too argumentative for that. Kirk will show up and insert himself into situations, arguing with people who don’t want to give him what he is asking for, or trying to explain his reasoning in depth to other characters. This is because he is anxious and security-oriented, wanting to control what he can so that he feels safer. He obsesses over rules, structure, and “doing things right,” even if he poorly executes his plan.
He needs reassurances from everyone all the time, even if he pretends not to; this is why he over-explains, and has to boast about his accomplishments (he won a trophy, everyone needs to look at it and recognize how good he is at this particular thing; he wants everyone to know that Lulu finds him hot!). Kirk is fearful of his mother and crossing her or disappointing her, so he tries to find sneaky ways to get what he wants without angering her too much; and then when he does assert himself, he goes overboard, and angrily tells her that he is moving out and winds up on someone’s couch for a few days.
His default is to be negative and a pessimist, as he points out what is going wrong in his life/the town/his job search/Lorelai’s jeep, and he predicts the worst-case scenario (it’s going to die on the road, the porch is going to fall in, termites are going to eat through your house, etc.).
The 7 Wing
But… he is also ambitious, experimental, and has a scattered focus. Kirk rarely sticks with one job for more than a few days, because he’s already bored with it and moving on by the next episode or even a few hours later. He tries everything at least once, only to abandon it and never return to that profession again. He has scattered hobbies and interests that go the same way; he’ll make a special lotion for awhile and sneak it into the hotel’s bedrooms to sell the guests on it, but then will disappear or pretend he knows nothing about it when people get hives.
Despite his awkwardness, Kirk also has an inflated sense of his own superiority (thanks to a loud 3 fix in his tritype) and sells himself as “the best at” everything even if it’s not true (7 wings are quite good at imagining a good outcome, once 6 has cycled through its anxiety first). He also is high energy, ambitious, and scattered in his focus, all traits of 7.
