MBTI Type: ESTJ
Sgt. Carter is all about order and rules and he doesn’t like people to step out of line, which means he hates having Gomer Pyle in his barracks, because Gomer listens to nothing he says, never wipes that stupid grin off his face, does dumb things like befriend skunks, and messes up Carter’s chances of beating other sergeants in terms of having spotless barracks. He believes in schedules, routines, and abiding by the guidelines set out for them by the military, and doesn’t like anyone to deviate from them. He is content to show up day after day and do the same things, run all the same drills, and prepare his men in the same ways, all in the service of the country he believes in fully. Carter in this way shows how much he cares about things that last, and that attach him to something bigger than himself—the future of his country but also the past in how they follow ‘how things are done.’ He can be short-sighted but also will change his mind about Gomer in certain episodes, when Gomer saves the day or gets the sergeant out of hot water (often, because of something Gomer did to put him in it). He doesn’t show his Fi very often, except in how much his job matters to him, and how he never disguises the annoyance he feels at dealing with ineptitude.
Enneagram: 8w7
Sgt. Carter spends most of his time overreacting to everything and screaming at everyone, in a stereotypical take on an Enneagram 8. He yells at people for being incompetent. He yells at people for being late. He even yells at people for being too happy. Gomer drives him nuts, and he looks for ways to deal with his insanity through forcefulness. He assumes he can yell the happy-go-lucky right out of him and… it never works. When Gomer sometimes breaks the rules to ‘get even’ with people who set out to sabotage Sgt. Carter, he cackles about it, and feels delighted, since he thinks you should fight fire with fire. He also shows 7 wing optimism about his chances at promotions and his determination to win at whatever he does.
