Introverted Intuition
Ni-doms often know things without needing to be taught, because they easily grasp abstract concepts and their intuition fills in the blanks. Katherine does this with math. Even as a child, she had an instinctual comprehension of it beyond many of her processors, and excelled in all her classes, allowing her to move on to a college-level mathematics course at thirteen years old. She quickly grasps the system, and abstract complex equations, seeing what others miss when it comes to landing space shuttles effectively, including the math required to get the rocket into space and back down safely. She often “sees the answer,” and then has to figure out how to get there, which is Ni flashing to the solution and building backwards to ensure their vision is fully executed.
Extraverted Thinking
Her math skills are focused in a specific direction, for a particular purpose; it is all tied to the mission, her team, and getting their astronauts safely home. Katherine applies what she knows to whatever task her supervisors put in front of her. She is logical and detached, but also angry if she is not given the facts necessary to figure out her equations (she finally bucks authority, holds the documents up to the light, and reads through the blacked out bits, to calculate the math necessary to make a successful rocket launch). One of Katherine’s pet peeves in not having “clearance” is that at the end of the day, all her calculations are dumped in the trash as being no longer relevant to the launch math. “Things move so fast around here,” her supervisor says, “that it’s nothing personal.” Katharine knows she can adjust herself that fast, if they just up her security clearance. She is also aware of the world she lives in, and tries to work within the system rather than changing it, until it starts causing massive problems (it’s irrational for her to have to walk so far just to use a “colored bathroom,” and then to get blamed for not being at her desk).
Introverted Feeling
She puts up with a lot of intolerance and unfairness at work without complaint until she has finally had enough, and then she lets her supervisor and coworkers have it. Under stress, after having to run half an hour in the rain just to use a bathroom and having her supervisor demand to know where she goes every day for 45 minutes at a time, Katherine talks about how they treat her, how she must use her own coffee pot, how there are no bathrooms for “me anywhere in this block,” and how she has never complained but that it’s unfair. Her outburst results in a departmental change across NASA (“at NASA,” her ETJ supervisor asserts, “everyone pees the same color!”). She is touchy whenever anyone infers that women cannot do math.
Extraverted Sensing
Her friends say that Katherine is rarely in the moment, because she is daydreaming and staring out the window instead of focusing on helping them change a flat tire. She has to be nudged by her extraverted friend to go up to and talk to a handsome man at church, because she is slow to initiate. She is content to do most of her work from behind a desk, rather than to be hands-on or around the rockets.
The Enneagram 1
Katherine never complains even though she does not receive fair treatment at work; she pushes down her resentment over how unfair this is, and deals with it. She also picks her battles well; ignoring the bathroom situation until it starts interfering with her productivity, and focusing instead on asking to be included in briefings, being given access to data, and to receive recognition for her work. She does so respectfully, but she asserts herself several times. And when she does object to having to run so far every day, causing her to be absent for 45 minutes from her desk, she talks about the racism behind it; not that it is just inconvenient, but that it’s wrong and unfair. Since most of them had never thought about it before, her voicing this objection finally puts her on equal ground with those around her, and she deals with less bigotry from the men. Katherine doesn’t like her children fussing, and tells them to stop, threatening them with chores if they don’t behave.
The 9 Wing
She does not cause conflict unnecessarily, and deals with a lot of her problems without asking anyone to intervene. She stays composed and polite, and puts up with unfair treatment a lot longer than is necessary, because she realizes that’s how the world is, in black and white terms, and she doesn’t think she has a choice. She endures her discomfort until it explodes out of her. Kathleen uses the “colored coffee pot” they put out for her, even though it makes her mad that she has to fill it herself and wait for it to boil, when she’s doing as much work as anyone else.
