Hitch is forever in search of the next “thrill,” the next high, the next thing to excite him into a frenzy. He is easily bored and in search of stimulation – if he cannot find a film project, he over-indulges his massive appetite. He has expensive taste. Hitch is drawn to beautiful women and diabolical, thrilling books full of grotesque pictures that he knows he can turn into hair-raising suspense-thrillers. Nothing fazes him, and he frequently says and does things just to test other people’s reactions and get a rise out of him. Hitch searches for opportunities to act.He quietly sizes up situations and expresses what he wants in clear terms; when presented with a problem, Hitch thinks his way around it. The studio believes they can prevent him from making Psycho by refusing to finance it; Hitch turns around and pays for all of it himself, placing his house on the line in the process. Though a master of suspense and a great filmmaker, he often relies on his wife to come in and take control of things, to organize them for him, and to tell him where his films need “cutting.” He deals in shocking statements, clever comebacks, and thinking through problems on his own. The crowd’s emotional reaction to his movies feeds Hitch’s need for affirmation; he complains that no one ever gives him the accolades he deserves, implying his desire for Hollywood to praise him as a filmmaker. Whenever he is tired, out of sorts, or depressed, Hitch becomes openly melancholy, whines about his diet, his stars, etc., and shouts at people. He wears his emotions openly and is wounded when Alma doesn’t confide her emotions in him, or support him. He is not always forthcoming in his own praise, but what he says, he means wholeheartedly. He likes to flirt and tease his actresses. Once Hitch gets a vision of what he wants in his head, he stops at nothing to create it on screen – which includes certain of his actresses complaining about him trying to “remake them” into an ideal image. Many of the projects he chooses have symbolic meaning, as do his consultations with a murderer who lives in his head and points him in the direction of truths. Hitch has an uncanny ability to zero in on a project and barrel through to the end. He knows what he wants and refuses to be swayed from it. And, he can often anticipate if something will be successful of not.

Hitch’s movies are all about voyeurism – he uses a lens as a way to perceive reality and get close to his subject, without ever actually “touching” it. His movies revolve around themes of fear, and he focuses n what scares him being scary to other people (loss of identity, kidnapping, suspense, terror, betrayal, secrets, and going on the run from corrupt policemen). Rear Window in particular is a 5ish film, about watching people from a distance without ever participating directly in their life, and being powerless. Hitch uses movies as a way to get close to beautiful women and lust after them, without ever actually acting on his impulses. Hitch likes to remake them into a perfect image of womanhood and has a very specific aesthetic that he pushes them to embrace. He is also emotionally detached and eccentric, sees himself as different from most other people (and doesn’t want to be more like them), and struggles to remain emotionally engaged in his marriage. He defies the censorship of the time and argues against it, sneaking in whatever he can get away with and enjoying pulling one over on them in the process. His 6 wing remains attached to his wife and is somewhat dependent on her assistance; he feels incomplete without her participation in his projects and her moral support.
