MBTI Type: ESTJ
Kate is a professional businesswoman who is quite forthcoming in her opinions, and finds it hard to keep her mouth shut about others being irresponsible or irrational. She doesn’t see the point in her brother wasting so much of his life pursuing a career that will never make him any money (as an actor who never gets any work; it’s not a “real” job!). When Leopold marches off the set and refuses to finish shooting his commercial, Kate says his opinion is not valid, because this is a job, and sometimes you have to suck it up and do things you don’t want to do, because that’s how life is. It’s silly to put personal feelings ahead of what needs done. She has a lot of emotional baggage tied up in her previous experience with Stuart, her ex-boyfriend “the flake” ENTP who broke her heart. Kate took care of him, paid his bills, and always hoped he would make something of himself, but has “wasted” so much of her life in the process. She is highly driven, but also very down to earth and practical, seeing dreamers as idealists who are unable to keep their feet on the ground. It’s not until she sees a picture of herself in the past that she realizes all the stuff Leopold has been telling her about himself are true, and she decides to uproot her life and move into Victorian times for a chance at love. Kate is creative enough to see potential in Leopold where no one else does; she tells her executives they should give him a chance based on the data (all the women who were practically asleep two minutes ago are now awake and enthusiastic!). Her inferior Fi shows in her unhinged emotions; if she does become emotional, it’s often out of her control. She doesn’t like to be criticized or made to feel small, and also struggles to contain her feelings or let them out in romantic relationships; she starts crying over breakfast when Leopold treats her like a princess, because no one has ever been this kind to her before. She complains that people solicit her opinions and then get their feelings hurt when she gives a critique (because they are irrational). But Kate eventually does follow her heart, right into the past.
Enneagram: 1w9
Kate has such high standards, she finds it irritating when other people want to put up with subpar things; she complains that people get mad when they hire her firm to tell them what is wrong, and then get offended by it, because they think the movie sucks or the advertising department could use a makeover. She winds up criticizing her ex-boyfriend for being such a disappointment and regrets spending so much time hoping he would become a better or more responsible person; her early interactions with Leopold all involve her telling him what he ought to be doing (you can’t just leave a dog out in the hall, take him for a walk! Pick up after him!). She makes him dinner even if she resents having to do it, because her brother invited him over, and thinks his whole mid-last-century gentleman thing is weird, but Kate slowly gets to appreciate being cared for by him. She wants to keep her life peaceful, to avoid emotional upsets, and is apologetic when she criticizes her brother and then hurts his feelings. At one point, she confesses that she feels beautifully relaxed and would like life to be like this more often. She tries to tactfully remind her boss to stay on topic, rather than make this “a date” (instead of a business proposal) but then is upset when Leopold accuses him of taking advantage of the situation.
