Leopold MBTI & Enneagram | Kate and Leopold

MBTI Type: ESFJ

Leopold is a charming man, who easily makes people like him simply by entering a room. He pays attention to what others are thinking and feeling and responds to it; when he notices Charlie is boring a bunch of girls with his never-ending, attention-seeking spiel, he politely and delicately redirects the conversation to a topic of interest that will capture their attention (the Louve). He is forthcoming with his feelings, from dismay and distress to affection, and his desire to care for Kate in a manner that does her honor is quite effective on her. Since he is so appealing, he easily wins over his audience in the butter commercial tryouts, he makes Charlie feel better about himself, and he tells him how to be more attentive to a woman’s needs. He reacts from his emotions most of the time, including confronting people when he sees them doing anything wrong, or turning down a job he doesn’t want that he feels would dishonor him, even though Kate tells him it doesn’t matter, it’s just a paycheck. To him, it’s not about the money. Leopold enters the modern era, but holds onto what feels familiar to him; his polite Victorian manners, how he treats a woman, and his beliefs. He continues to dress as a duke, and often references his previous life when framing his expectations for the future. He also shows a lot of creative low Ne; in his own time, he was an inventor who came up with the elevator. Everything new and innovative fascinated him, and he was often encouraging people to look toward the future with expectation and shake off the past. He tinkers with and fixes a toaster that burns toast the second time you push it down, after ranting about the idiot who designed it. Leopold in that way shows a decent use of Ti in his tinkering with things, his desire to fix them, his innovations, his plans for the future, etc.

Enneagram: 2w1

Leopold makes good use of his time in being polite and pleasant to everyone he meets, but also knowing how he intends to win over Kate. He goes out of his way to prepare dinner for her, to woo her, to dance with her, and doesn’t want her to do anything for herself when he could do it. His initial argument with his father is over his desire to fall in love and pick a woman based on his feelings, rather than a need to live off her money, and he winds up doing so with Kate. Leopold is a warm man who eagerly helps out Charlie, by telling him how to flatter, woo, and make a woman feel desirable; he says it’s important to keep the ball in Charlie’s court and not call her back too soon, so as to maintain the allure. He gives him lessons on composure and deportment, and makes it easy for women to like him because of his cultured interests and flattery. Leopold’s 1 wing is also strong. He is quite critical of people and things that do not live up to his standard, he refuses to encourage people to buy diet butter when it tastes like “saddle soap” (it would impugn his honor)! He tells Kate what is wrong with her, and that he feels it is a shame that she has compromised her integrity. Leopold inserts himself uninvited into her life, and intervenes with her boss, by turning up a little drunk but insistent at the restaurant, and calling out her boss for taking advantage, “attempting to turn a lady into a whore,” and abusing his position of power. Then the next day he feels remorse for having caused trouble for her, and tries to make it up to her with a profound apology.
