Edmund Sparkler MBTI & Enneagram | Little Dorrit

ISFP 9w1 Characters

Edmund is a sweet young man, but he’s also clueless about how others feel about him—he can’t tell what Fanny thinks of him, because she blows hot one day and cold the next. She will tell him to get lost, and then welcome his attentions. It’s all rather confusing, for a man with “very little between his ears” (as someone comments at his stepfather’s dinner party; so he should do well in government!). His emotions are always out of sync with everyone around him, or a half step behind, because he’s disassociated from them and lost in his own feelings and thoughts. But his expressions of happy admiration are genuine, and he manages to see the best in everyone he meets (sometimes, to his own downfall). Edmund reads things on the surface level, and is very present and quick to act. He likes Fanny, so he pursues her directly, bringing her flowers and treats and following her around Venice. He has his heart dead set on her, because she’s a damn fine girl with no nonsense about her! He doesn’t have much in the way of lower functions, since Dickens turns him into rather a parody of a rich idiot with a heart of gold.

Enneagram: 9w1

Edmund is pretty much bossed around by the 8 women in his life, first by his mother and then by Fanny, who manages to curb many of his annoying traits simply by telling him to shut up and stop blathering on. He’s ruffled by any kind of emotional upset, and doesn’t want his mom or his wife to be angry with him. But also doesn’t have any real depth of feeling in terms of tragedies—he talks about how it’s just awful, yes, but then rather quickly becomes positive again. I mean, it’s a real shame the Dorrits have lost all their money, but I could easily find you a job, in my own department, in fact! There’s good money… well, a bit… and you needn’t even do much! Sparkler just kind of pleasantly floats along in life, looking on the bright side and refusing to be pessimistic about anything. Fanny treats him horribly and still he clings to her, molds his life around her tastes and interests, and is a perfect caricature of “hen-pecked.”
