Jane Foster MBTI & Enneagram | Thor | Love and Thunder

INTP 5w6 Characters

Jane is a classic example of the MCU’s failure to flesh out most of their female love interests, because her personality is generic “NT” genius, but there’s not a lot of specific interactions that prove her type. She seems to most fit the INTP, however, because she’s a brilliant astrophysicist who is generally more competent with theories and innovations and doing research than she is good with people or interested in their interactions. She spends the first two films having a general interest in science and innovation, writing various award-winning papers on different topics, and theorizing, and her final film as using the unorthodox method of listening to and mastering Thor’s Hammer, in an attempt to cure her own body of cancer. She’s aware that this is not working, but unwilling to let go of it, as long as she can do good with it—which can be argued as her low Fe need to contribute back to society, even if it requires the last of her strength. Her feeling function is so poor, however, that she chose to write Thor a breakup letter and leave it for him to find, rather than having a heart to heart conversation; ITPs can be fearful of situations in which the other person’s emotions might be engaged or escalate, because they aren’t sure how to cope with those feelings or calm other people down. She understands her own life span in a thinker way (realizing she is dying), but is also failing to process it meaningfully—leading to her attempting to sidestep the issue with Thor, breaking down in tears, and wanting to change the subject. Jane is somewhat avoiding her own mortality when we first catch up with her, because she’s impatient to get back to her research, rather than wanting to sit there through several hours of chemotherapy.

Enneagram: 5w6

Jane is a thinker to the hilt—detached and analytical, calm in a bad situation, totally self-confident about her decisions, conclusions, and theories, but somewhat hiding behind them in being an expert in her chosen field. She does feel good about being part of something larger than herself as the movies go on, connecting to Thor, the Asgardian community, and the children she intends to rescue, but she can be impatient and demanding in wanting to do her part, even though it’s at a great personal risk to herself. She devalues her self-preservation instinct in the process, because it’s all about connecting and serving the public good (social dominance) and having great energy, drive, and passion, but also a tendency to abandon things when they lose their spark (her relationship with Thor, and her subsequent breakup, showing her sx instinct). Once again, this is more of a general “this must be her type” assessment, as opposed to any particular instance in the films proving a type beyond a shadow of a doubt. 5s trust themselves way more than they trust anyone else, and that’s Jane to a hilt.
