Jim is a mechanic and after he wakes up early, he wants to know why and tries to both figure out how to hack into his pod so he can go back to sleep, and understand what happened to him. He’s very good at creating work-arounds and hacks, improving his life on the ship and finding ways to survive and thrive. But… he’s lonely, and that makes him debate the moral ethics of waking up Aurora so that he doesn’t have to be alone. He knows it will condemn both of them to death before they ever reach their destination, and it’s immoral to lie to her about accidentally waking her up, but he can’t bear to be by himself. Instead of making a moral decision for himself, he waffles about it and even asks an android what he thinks, before ultimately choosing to sabotage her pod and kick her out of cryo-sleep. This shows how much he thinks about things before committing to them; but his Se is also fully embodied and risk-taking. He quickly adapts to his new environment, he tries out everything pleasurable it has to offer (dance challenges, walking into space, exploring the gardens, even planting a tree for her in the middle of the mall, and binge-drinks when he gets upset), and he thinks about his future. He signed up for the program for a ‘new’ life on a new planet, wanting to start over and not really holding any special attachment to earth. Once he knows what’s ahead for him, he comes to terms with it and is willing to die if necessary to ensure the rests of the ship makes it peacefully to its destination.

Jim freaks out when he wakes up 90 years early on the space ship, and immediately tries to find someone in ‘authority’ to help solve his problem. He sorts through the information he finds on the deck, he tries to wake up the crew and get into their bunker, and he confides in Arthur, the robot who runs the bar. When he falls in love with Aurora after seeing her, he debates whether or not to wake her up, asking Arthur for his opinion and then begging him not to tell her the truth. He is cautious in investigating things, and negative about their chances of survival, but also willing to sacrifice himself for everyone on the ship—he thinks he has to stay holding open the door and that the heat from the melting core will incinerate him, then is surprised when Aurora forgives him and comes to get him when he floats out into space. Though introspective, Arthur is also open to new experiences, to taking risks, and to the pleasures and fun the ship has for its paying customers, even down to such small things as a nice latte (above his pay grade).
