In Predator: Badlands, Dek (voiced by Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi) emerges as one of the franchise’s most psychologically interesting Yautja protagonists. Driven by tactical logic, relentless self-reliance, and a burning need to prove his strength, Dek embodies the traits of an ISTP 8w7. His journey from outcast “weakling” to self-made warrior highlights dominant Introverted Thinking (Ti), adaptable Extraverted Sensing (Se), stubborn visionary focus (Ni), and slowly developing inferior Extraverted Feeling (Fe). Let’s break down Dek’s MBTI type and Enneagram core motivations, and explore how his personality shapes his arc.

Introverted Thinking

Since Dek’s decisions are driven by logic and tactical efficiency, he cannot resonate with Thia’s Fe-dom approach of trying to establish camaraderie and viewing things through the lens of ethics. She has to convince him she is “useful” to him for him to consider hauling her along, and he leaves behind his “pet” Bud despite being adopted into its family when he feels it would slow him down. It’s only later that he comes to create a new family with both of them (more on this in the inferior Fe section).
When his father murders his brother for protecting him, the “weakling” of the clan, Dek sets out to prove him logically wrong, by doing what his father does not believe is possible (defeating an enemy no one has ever defeated before, and “earning” his place in his clan). He weighs risks when confronting the Kalisk and enemy forces, improvises traps, and executes plans with precision. He processes his feelings through his actions and doesn’t allow his intense grief and anger over his brother’s death to stop him in his tracks.
Dek dissects threats and mechanics of the world on the spot, or before he gets involved. He considers risk versus reward at every step, whether that’s choosing which creature to hunt first or how to configure an improvised trap against synthetics. His internal logical framework dictates which actions will yield success. His goal is to prove himself worthy according to his own standards as much as his clan’s. Rather than get involved with others, he observes and adjusts. His interactions with Thia begin as transactional and practical, not social, until trust grows through their shared objectives (Thia says if he gets her back to her body, she can help him defeat the Kalisk).
Extraverted Sensing
His skills come from direct experience and sensory data. On Genna, Dek rapidly deciphers environmental hazards, using and avoiding flora and fauna to survive, and crafts weapons from local resources (capturing and using the exploding plant to help him invade the compound, and recruiting a creature that spits acid for the same reason). This is what Se users are good at; adapting in the moment with whatever practical tools are at hand. He problem-solves while he encounters things (TiSe).
Rather than follow rigid plans or even think too far ahead , Dek thrives on flexibility and improvisation; he makes it up as he goes along and adapts on the way, including bringing Thia and Bud on board. When his traditional gear is lost, he creates new weapons from the environment. And multiple times, we see him getting creative with a situation, fighting, running, ducking, or using the native terrain to his advantage. Once he is comfortable with things and feels more attached to his friends, he even spits on his “pet,” thus informing it that it is now part of his family and under his protection. His aggressive desire to interact with the Kalisk shows total fearlessness and confidence in his fighting skills.
His skill at immediate sensory engagement (tracking movements, reading terrain, working with tactile tools) shows strong Se. Dek lives in the moment, sizing up threats and opportunities quickly, and his environmental adaptability on Genna is Se in its purest form: respond, adjust, act.
Introverted Intuition

Read my horro novels!
Dek decides on the spot he is going to kill the Kalisk, and that will prove to his father he is strong and brave enough to be part of the clan, and he never wavers from this desire even when he gets to Genna and realizes the creature can regenerate itself endlessly, making killing it almost impossible. Confronted with the reality of the situation (Se), he cannot waver from his visualized intended outcome (Ni) and persists in it, even when it seems to be a losing battle.
He occasionally shows pattern recognition and long-range insight, especially in understanding the Kalisk’s nature and the larger implications of his choices (e.g., freeing Bud’s mother and confronting Weyland-Yutani), but more often lives in the moment and desires to create a better future for himself.
Extraverted Feeling
Dek struggles with emotional expression in conventional terms, yet forms bonds (with Thia and Bud). These connections aren’t sentimental at first; they’re born of shared experience and loyalty forged in high-stakes situations. His “found family” moment is less about emotional warmth and more about recognizing mutual value through what they can offer each other. Dek starts off very callous and closed off from both Thia and Bud, but over time, we see him start to care about them and respond to their pain. But it’s delayed.
He wants to fit in with his clan and to live up to their expectations for him, which shows that he is drawing his “ethical values” from a group, rather than creating them for himself (no Fi). After defeating his father, Dek realizes he has created his OWN family full of creatures that actually care about, support, and want to be with him, so he does not need to appeal to his father’s clan. (He is also upset when his spitting eel is killed, which shows his emotional growth.)
The Enneagram 8

Dek comes from an entire family of 8s, and the Predators in general are 8s; their entire society is about defeating the weakness in themselves and being the ultimate Predator. To earn their place in the clan, they have to go out and bring back creatures’ heads to prove themselves through force and battle. He is angry about not being seen as tough enough because of his small stature, and determined to prove himself to his father, brother, and the entire clan.
He’s angry when his brother is brutally killed protecting him.
Rather than let his father’s disdain define him, Dek charges into danger, picks out the most unlikely creature to kill to prove himself, and acts decisively and aggressively, even when out of his element. He refuses to let being injured stop him or slow him down.
His arc is about proving himself strong on his terms, which is pure 8. He rejects his father’s claims of his unworthiness and survives against overwhelming odds. There’s no guarantee he will succeed, but he doesn’t care about that because it’s about him versus everything else. Being an 8 also shuts him off from admitting vulnerability, or from wanting to help Thia and Bud, until they “earn” his protection.
The 7 Wing
If 7 carries a blend of delusional optimism with it… so does Dek. He has no ability to access his own limitations, and an unbelievably positive self-regard despite being a “runt” among the Predators. He’s small and often beat in hand-to-hand combat, yet still thinks he can bring back the head of a creature no one has ever hunted. Upon seeing it and its powerful regeneration skills, Dek still tries to bring it down. He insists he is not responsible for Bud or for Thia and only brings them along for practical reasons after they help him out a few times. He simply believes he can succeed, and his optimism, grit, and fierceness carry him through.

Why Dek Isn’t an 8w9
(8w7 vs 8w9)
Some viewers interpret Dek as an 8w9 because he can appear calm, observant, and self-contained, but his behavior throughout Predator: Badlands aligns more strongly with 8w7 than with the steadier, more restrained 8w9.
First, 8w9s typically prefer stability and controlled strength, conserving energy and avoiding unnecessary conflict unless their independence is threatened. Dek shows the opposite pattern. Rather than minimizing danger, he repeatedly leans into confrontation, seeking out challenges and testing himself against hostile environments. This willingness to escalate conflict and prove strength through action is far more typical of 8w7.
Second, the Seven wing adds energy, risk-taking, and improvisation to the Eight personality. Dek consistently shows these traits. He adapts quickly to threats, acts boldly in unpredictable situations, and pushes forward with a certain reckless confidence. Instead of pacing himself carefully the way many 8w9s do, he moves fast and aggressively, embracing the excitement of the hunt.
Finally, 8w9s often keep their intensity internally contained, showing a calmer emotional surface. Dek, however, expresses his reactions more openly by displaying frustration, competitive drive, and defiant determination when challenged. His energy pushes outward rather than remaining controlled and subdued.
