Jane Bennet MBTI & Enneagram | Pride and Prejudice

MBTI Type: ISFJ

Jane is sweet, considerate, and reads things on a surface level; she assumes if people are good and kind to her, that they must have good intentions. She is quiet, content at home, and is always surprised by Lizzie’s bold N statements about people, what lies behind their actions, and what their true character is. Mostly what stands out though is her secondary Fe. Jane at one point says she is so happy, because of how happy her engagement will make her whole family, and that she has done something lovely for all of them. This marks her nature. She is always thinking about other people and their needs, in context of what she can do to elevate their happiness; if they are happy, so too is she, and she can hardly bear it, that her heart contains so much joy all at once. She easily talks to Lizzie about all of her feelings—of sadness, happiness, sorrow, and disappointment, as things happen to her, either through heartfelt conversations or in letters. Jane is also analytical, and tries to make sense of the world through asking questions, finding out details about Lydia and Wickham and Bingley, etc. But it takes her a little while to see the big picture; where Lizzie immediately sees the impact of her sister’s actions on the whole family, and what it means for them all (disgrace and ruin), Jane has to think about it for a time, and then come back and discuss it with her several hours later. She only believes Lizzie’s intuition about Bingley’s sisters until she observes their actions in person in London (“they made it quite clear they did not wish to be there”).

Enneagram: 9w1

Jane is amiable and good-natured, always hoping for the best and looking for the bright side of life. She assumes everyone has good intentions all the time, and that Lizzie is being too “hard” on people. Her father teases her that she will always be taken advantage of by servants, because she’s too kind-hearted and agreeable to keep them in line, and she simply laughs about it. It takes her traveling to London and finding out that Bingley’s sisters aren’t as nice as she wanted them to be, for her to realize she was wrong about them, and they did in fact sabotage her prospects with her brother. She is more forgiving and docile than Lizzie, but also more serious. She is so circumspect, and keep things so quiet inside of her, that Darcy mistakes her for feeling less than is true of her heart. But Jane is also dutiful, responsible, and critical of poor manners, bad behavior, and anything inappropriate. She wants to be proper, and self-contained.
