Mr. Bingley MBTI & Enneagram | Pride and Prejudice

MBTI Type: ESFJ

Bingley is very concerned with treating others well and being appropriate to the situation, which makes him uncomfortable when others cause a scene, are rude, or speak against anyone whom he finds favorable. He counters his sisters constantly with positive remarks about everyone he meets, and delightedly gets to know people, tolerating their absurd little stories and behaviors. He is quite apparent in his feelings, compared to the more introverted Jane. And tragically, he allows his sisters and Darcy to peer pressure him into returning to London rather than speaking to Jane about an engagement, because he wants to get along with them. But each time he meets Lizzie thereafter, he eagerly asks after her sister. Bingley is very present-focused, and loves to hunt, ride horses, go to balls, take pleasure in the company of merry young folk, and to have people stay at the house. He never reads bad intentions into anyone or anything, preferring instead to have an optimistic view of the future with his low Ne, and to see things in his own particular way. He rarely questions anyone or their intentions, but assumes everything is going to work out all right in the end.

Enneagram: 9w1

Bingley is an abundance of goodness, kindness, and cheer, who always looks on the bright side of absolutely everything; his sisters think the locals are insufferable, and he says he’s never seen so many pretty girls in all his life. They don’t want to be around Mrs. Bennett, but he finds her “charming”! He tells Darcy he doesn’t need his approval to marry Jane, but should like it, and immediately forgives the man for pulling them apart. Though he claims he doesn’t need Darcy to approve of his marriage, he admits that “I would rather you did [like it].” He hates any kind of conflict, which is what makes him sacrifice Jane temporarily, to avoid his sisters and best friend from harassing him about the match (yet, it does not change his feelings or his instincts about Jane being a good person and someone worthy of his affections). He does want to do right, and finds it hard to comprehend that his friend sees problems wherever he looks, because Bingley does not.
