Meredith is in charge for a reason – she’s a natural leader, who makes strong judgment calls without allowing sentiment to get in the way. She lays down orders, and expects obedience – she’s closing the doors (for all their protection) in fifteen minutes – be back to the ship. When Charlie is infected, for the good of everyone on board, she refuses to let him back in – and when forced, though she hates doing it, exterminates him rather than lets him infect the others. She has quick comebacks for any comments thrown her way, and doesn’t seem “bothered” by frankness (if she’s looking to get laid, why leave behind a planet full of men?). Life has an order, a way of doing things, a method. Meredith believes this. She’s annoyed that her father wanted a boy, and never had much respect in her, but the one thing that kept her going was that someday, he’d die and leave her in charge. That’s how life works. That’s the inevitable conclusion of life, that it ends. History proves it. Meredith is careful, methodical, attentive to details, with a no-nonsense approach to life. Yet, she also can see the big picture, very quickly; she is skeptical of her father’s grandiose ideas and isn’t afraid to terminate the mission based on new evidence. Meredith keep the bigger picture in mind when dealing with her team. She’s also far more cautious than most of them, when it comes to interacting with the new environment (she doesn’t know what’s out there). It’s evident from her brief interaction with her father that Meredith has intense feelings, but she doesn’t often let them out. They influence some of her worldview and life choices, but she suffers in silence.

Meredith is one of the more rational, sensible, and cautious members of the team, who has no intention of setting foot outside the ship herself until it’s about to slam into an alien object, and then she tries to save her own life. She is so apprehensive about allowing an infected person back onto the ship, she dons a space suit and goes out there to use a flame thrower on him to keep him away. She urges the others to be careful and not take risks, but mostly is concerned with her own survival. Meredith is loyal to her father, even if she resents him for his behavior and for dragging her to the middle of nowhere, but also has the fierceness to withdraw from him, leave him there, and overcome his loss quickly. She doesn’t see the point in staying after the mission has failed, but instead intends to return to earth to report it as a failure and a massive waste of resources.
