Maura Isles MBTI & Enneagram | Rizzoli & Isles

Maura Isles’ ISTJ 3w2 personality reveals why she’s equal parts brilliant, driven, awkwardly compassionate, and unforgettable.

Maura Isles’ MBTI and Enneagram typing has long fascinated fans of Rizzoli & Isles. Portrayed by Sasha Alexander, Dr. Maura Isles displays clear traits of an ISTJ and aligns closely with Enneagram 3w2. As Boston’s meticulous medical examiner, Maura embodies the ISTJ’s devotion to factual accuracy, methodical analysis, and respect for established procedures, while her 3w2 Enneagram drive shows up in her polished appearance, ambition, and desire to be both impressive and helpful. This unique combination makes Maura a standout ISTJ 3w2 character, blending clinical precision with warmth, generosity, and a surprisingly deep emotional core.

Introverted Sensing

16 Kinds of Crazy, the essential MBTI book.
Learn your MBTI Type.

Maura has incredible capacity to remember details not only from previous civilizations and every article she has ever read on a multitude of different topics, but her own life experiences. She will rattle off knowledge like an encyclopedia, only to have Jane urge her to get to the point, since that information is superfluous to the crime scene.

She does not like to be rushed in gathering evidence and has a strong resistance toward ‘lying’ or ‘leaping to conclusions’ (Ne repression). Maura has a thousand facts in her brain about everything from parenting to medical treatment centers to exactly what happens in the human brain when you do drugs. She falls back into previous relationships easily because she remembers how things were the previous time they were involved. Maura cares a lot about family, and laments many times that her mother was not more hands-on with her, and that she felt left out of their adult lives because she was adopted. It bothers her a lot to find out her father was an amoral gangster, since that could mean that she carries genetic defects in her DNA.

When she discovers her mother’s true identity from comparing her father’s sketch of her to her mother’s appearance, then confirms it with behavioral traits (they are very much alike), Maura at first feels hesitant to tell her the truth, then decides to donate her liver to her half-sister anonymously so she can recover from a life-threatening illness; that’s how much she values Si-driven family attachments.

Maura also does not like changes to her routine; when she has to perform autopsies or give medical treatment anywhere other than her lab, she complains about not having the right tools, and wanting to transport bodies back to her lab.

Extroverted Thinking

She refuses to hypothesize on motivations or conclusions until she has tangible proof, showing her tendency to work from many details toward the big picture and only factor in things that seem logical.

Maura has a tendency to look at everything from a detached lens, which makes people misunderstand her; she ruins dates by diagnosing her potential lover’s medical problems while eating dinner with them. She has a pragmatic view of sex and attachments, and bases her attraction off of facts about humankind (women being biologically attracted to ‘dominant males,’ what makes men drawn to big-breasted women, etc.). She frequently voices these things when talking to other people, which they find disturbing because she’s so clinical about her diagnoses. (“You were probably sexually aroused and that caused your heart attack.”) To Maura, this is the facts of the situation and not something to feel humiliated about; it’s just a biological thing that the human body does in response to stimulus.

Introverted Feeling

When she starts to cry in one episode, she admits she can’t help it, and uses the scientific term for how her tears are being produced, rather than admitting she’s upset at the idea of Jane not wanting to run in the marathon with her. She has very poor control over her emotions when they do get triggered, despite wanting to function normally regardless of her situation. (Maura is depressed after her biological mother wants nothing to do with her, and upset to find out her father is a criminal; she is downhearted when her adopted mother forgets to put her on important lists and cancels dinner with her. But she finds it hard to talk to her mother about these feelings.)

Maura cares deeply about other people, but is oblivious to their feelings and not always sure of how to comfort them when they have a meltdown. Rather than deal with them being upset, she will refuse to confront them or try to avoid offending them. Maura can be robotic and clinical, but has a good heart and genuinely cares about others’ needs; in one episode, she’s upset at the idea of leaving a pregnant woman alone with her neglectful mother, because she would much rather take her home and let her live in the guesthouse.

Maura admits that people used to scare her and call her mean names, and it took her awhile to want to connect to any of them. But she also has a lot of passions, deep feelings for the men she falls in love with, and a tendency to personalize everything—she is interested in people, and their “art” – so a beautiful shoe in her mind is a piece of artwork.

Extroverted Intuition

Maura rarely looks beneath the surface of things and refuses to hypothesize without evidence; only when it’s in front of her is she willing to commit to a definite stance on how someone died, what happened to them, etc. She is frequently blindsided by her lovers, because she took them at face value and never suspected their true intentions.

But she also shows a low Ne tendency to have a ton of different hobbies and interests, and an intellectual curiosity about all of them (she knows all about chess, kayaking, skydiving, French poodles, the different ways to prepare food, and many more).

Maura is extremely likable and driven, with a seeming endless supply of positivity and ambition. She is always working on something and striving to achieve, maybe because she felt overlooked with her high-achieving parents. When her adopted mother is in town, Maura has to impress her with an eight-course meal, and only the best wine. She prides herself on knowing all about important, elite, and expensive things, from food to art to interpretive dance.

She is something of a workaholic in that she spends long hours there… but then she goes home to sample luxury products, or purchase fabulous shoes. She wears expensive tailored clothing and is delighted when other people of good taste recognize hers. She is always telling Jane to be more aware of her appearance, to try out a new hairstyle or invest in better shoes, or being shocked at her rough, tough manners.

Finding out her parents’ identity made it hard for her to know who she was, because her entire self-perspective shifted. Maura had to reconnect to her work in order to find herself and her sense of purpose again.

The 2 Wing

She’s generous almost to a fault; she lets Jane’s mother crash in her guest house rent free for months/years. She opens up her house to a pregnant woman and her child. If anyone needs anything, Maura will drop everything to get it for them… but she also buys Jane stuff that she does not always need or want. It drives her crazy with distress to try and figure out what gift to give Jane for her birthday, since she can think of a lot of things that Jane might need, but nothing that she might want (she does eventually find the perfect gift). Sometimes she uses her giving as a bartering tool to get Jane to go along with her schemes for a better diet, appearance, or set of behaviors. Maura is very warm-hearted, supportive, and caring toward people, even if her natural bluntness can be off-putting at first.
