Divya dared to step outside of her social expectations and family history to pursue a different career, and is always talking about and making plans for her future, often in ways the boys are resistant to—she gives them her “three-week notice” ahead of the wedding, and is already thinking about what her marriage will be like in London, and the kind of life she can live there, away from the Hamptons. When she hears about Hank starting up a medical practice, she immediately offers to become his assistant, by showcasing her particular logical skills, efficiency, and supplies, because she sees a vast potential in his business that no one else does. She is quite rational and good at solving problems, but saves most of her gentler side for children; Divya can be strongly opinionated with adults, and judge them for behaviors she does not like or that seem amoral or against her values (she judges Evan for watching a trashy reality show, then watches it herself and gets emotionally involved, then criticizes one of the women for not being emotionally authentic, because it is something she values in herself). Divya has a lot of feelings, they just do not get in the way of her keeping to her principles. She politely tells people that she can’t be bossed around, that she knows her own mind, and that she is going to do what she wants to do, but also does not want to disappoint her parents. She shows almost no lower Se, except to be impulsive once in a great while and overcome by the opportunities in the present (she kisses someone on a whim, but then feels embarrassed about it and wishes it had never happened).

While industrious, driven, and aware of what she wants for her life (to be a doctor), Divya is also too reliant on what others think and on her need to ensure they do not get upset with her. Rather than resist her parents’ demands for her life, Divya allows them to arrange a marriage for her, which she feels she must go through with on principle for a long time, because she gave her word, and it seems like an easy path to take. She also hides the truth about her medical work from them, out of a fear of their disapproval. She is quite pleasant to everyone she meets, except when she judges them for doing something amoral, sloppy, or wrong, as is the case where she insults a female doctor, then tries to smooth it over by saying she didn’t mean it, then turns around and says in fact she did mean it, and she doesn’t like her, or approve of her methods. Rather than go after her relationship with Hank directly, Divya looks for quieter and more subtle ways to get Hank to see “the truth” about her. She won’t allow herself to admit to her feelings about a patient, because it’s “inappropriate” in the workplace, and she is engaged! That should come before feelings… right?
