Hank Lawson MBTI & Enneagram | Royal Pains

MBTI Type: ISTJ

Hank is down to earth and methodical, going through each case by tracking down possible causes for the problem, then applying logical solutions, until he finds the thing that fits. His main interest is medicine, so he spends lots of time trying to find new methods to use in his practice, so his patients are always up to date on the newest medical innovations. He is quite good at living in the moment and appreciating each day, but sometimes his own subjective past experiences catch up to him, and we see that how he remembers events differs from how Evan and his father remembers them. His bad experiences cause him to be leery about his father’s intentions, with good reason—the man wipes out their savings account, then gets in debt to a loan shark, turns out to be informing on their patron, and is lying about everything. Just as Hank expected. He is quite frank and logical, pointing out what is medically wrong with people and looking for immediate and decisive solutions. While a kind man, Hank does not have an appealing bedside manner at times, since he refuses to play games with people who are hiding things from him. He also does not care what others think about him, and sees his relationship with a rival as “having fun.” Hank’s inferior Ne causes him not to think about or even consider a rival’s practice in the Hamptons as a problem, or one that could steal away his patients from him. He doesn’t see her as a threat, and ignores her various techniques to get at him, pinch his clients, and distract him with seductions, until she makes a serious medical error that almost gets one of his patients killed. He is also unaware of what Boris is up to, in his own house and on the grounds, and is shocked to learn he is hiding things from the FBI.

Enneagram: 1w2

Hank is, according to Evan, “stubborn” and “closed-minded,” because he reaches very firm decisions about things based on how they affect him. He doesn’t like his father, and chooses to look at him critically because of all their bad history together (he knows his father is a con man and a cheat). He is also skeptical of Evan’s various schemes, and scolds him and his father whenever they take advantage of a situation or expect too much from the wealthy philanthropist who allows them to stay at his estate. Hank insists on living to his own personal high standard, and can be critical of others, but also doesn’t go along with anything that does not make him feel good, from refusing payment for services rendered that were minor to not wanting to sign a release waver to have his face on a reality television series. He insists on doing good for others, and that his entire agenda is to ensure others get the best possible care at home, per their convenience. Hank believes he is doing what is best in any given situation, and is quick to offer his home as a crash pad for those who need help, to serve people even if they can’t pay, etc. He also gives his father a second chance, despite his misgivings about him, out of a sense of deeper compassion, and wants to be taken seriously as a doctor.
