Derek MBTI & Enneagram | Save the Last Dance

ESFJ 2w1 Characters

Derek is very warm and outgoing, and also emotional—he is easily offended when Sara says specific things to him (taking it personally when she asks him if he has any kids, since she knows his sister does; being upset when she doesn’t want to date him because it’s hard, even though he has just “punched my best friend in the face for you”), but also quick to make up with others and try to find common ground. He tries to convince his best friend to choose a different path forward than that of drug / gang wars, but also struggles not to feel responsible for him because his friend didn’t rat him out and send him to jail. Derek is very good at knowing what Sara needs to hear from him and saying it, including pushing her to go back to ballet, since he sees how happy it makes her, and reminding her that her dream is hers to obtain. He talks her through the anxiety of her audition and reminds her that “there’s no one else in the audience… just me.” He absolutely loves kids and wants to be a pediatrician, and so he tries to avoid getting caught up in local stuff that would hamper his grades or keep him from “getting out of here.” Derek loves to dance and socialize, but sometimes gets caught up in what his friends are doing—like all young Fe-doms, he cares about what they think of him and that got him into some trouble a few years back, when he went along with criminal behaviors. He also shows Ne in how he is optimistic about people, and wants to see them reach their full potential. He pushes his drug lord friend to think about a brighter future and how he could get out of here with enough goodwill and determination; he has hung onto him for a long time out of a sense of loyalty and gratitude for his friendship, even though his friend has continued to make questionable decisions. He doesn’t think about our question why Sara is appearing to break up with him, and doesn’t find out his sister was behind it until she confesses to him.

Enneagram: 2w1

Derek is full of confidence and assumes he’s needed wherever he goes; he hates to let down his friends, so he hangs around with them despite their questionable behavior, but also pushes them to make better life choices. He sees that Sara is interested in dancing but doesn’t know good hip hop moves, so he volunteers to teach her and then spends every day after school doing so. He offers to walk her home through a bad part of town. It’s a real struggle for him not to go with his best friend on a drive-by shooting just to keep him safe, because he feels a sense of loyalty and obligation to his loved ones. Derek wants to work with kids, and sails in to make his nephew stop crying, when he finds his sister and her ex in an argument about childcare. He becomes angry at times and tells people off, punches them out, or pulls his friends off each other when they’re in the midst of a quarrel. He gets so mad at Sara for breaking up with him, he storms out of the room. But he is also quick to patch things up between himself and others, and doesn’t want any bad blood to linger between them.
