MBTI Type: ISFJ
Garth is quite content living on a ranch in the middle of nowhere, doing the same thing every day. He actively tries to get Hub to commit to doing the things “retired people” do – such as gardening, wearing overalls, and shooting at salesmen… err… His stories for Walter are colored through personal perspective, his affection for his brother turning them into frolicking adventures that may have stretched the truth just a little bit. He uses former experience to shape his worldview (“Hub always hogs the bad guys… don’t hurt them…”). Garth is mild-mannered, but also goes out of his way to keep his brother happy and makes decisions with him in mind. In the deleted scenes, we find out he has been answering “yes” to home visits on advertising materials sent to the house, to lure traveling salesmen there so his brother can shoot at them and feel important and useful. Garth also cares about Walter, and take him under his wing. When trying to convince his brother to keep Walter from running away, he points out that “he sure pisses off the relatives,” knowing that will both appeal to Hub (who hates them) and give Walter a sense of purpose (like he’s doing them a favor by staying). He likes Walter right off the bat, but doesn’t tell him as much – he teases him a bit instead (“We’re old, so if we die, you’re on your own”). Much of his energy and focus goes into keeping Hub happy, while also letting him do pretty much whatever he wants. When he reaches the part of the story about Jasmine, Garth refuses to tell it, because that is not his story to tell. When Walter decides to run off, Garth asks him what his “plan” is, and points out that they have better maps back at the house. He has a practical approach to life. He likes to take action that will lead to results – such as planting a garden, buying useful things, and sometimes, telling hard truths. He can be a little naïve (“boy that salesman saw us coming!”), but also laughs about it – once he opens up his mind to indulging new whims and buying things off salesmen, he winds up with a lot of stuff, including a yacht in the back pond. His stories have a melodramatic, larger-than-life flair.
Enneagram: 9w8
Garth mentions several times that it “sure is peaceful” where he lives, and he seems to want that more than anything, even if that means enticing salesmen over so his brother can scare the living hell out of them for his own amusement. He wants to do “little things” like garden, drink tea on the porch, and doesn’t care that there’s no television or telephone. He is amiable and stays in the background. His brother took him on adventures and saved his life many times; he says he would have left Europe had it been up to him, but Hub suggested they travel and stay ahead of the Nazis, so that’s what they did. 9s tend to get sucked up in other’s wake and go along with them, and that’s what Hub did—he traveled because his brother did, fought in wars because his brother did, came home with tons of money because his brother defeated a sheikh. Garth tells Hub to calm down several times, and takes nothing he says personally, but also doesn’t mind applying pressure to situations, exploiting them for his own amusement, or encouraging his brother to beat up arrogant teenagers and “teach them a lesson,” because it makes Hub happy.
