Marianne Dashwood MBTI & Enneagram | Sense and Sensibility

INFP 4w3 Characters

Dominant Introverted Feeling – a self-knowledge and a desire to live in accordance with one’s personal values: Marianne’s emotional responses dictate all of her decisions; she doesn’t like it when others attempt to set her up with Brandon, and hurries out of the house to avoid him, while showing preferences for Willoughby. But her own feelings toward him change, once she begins to compare his actions to Willoughby, and finds him a much superior man. Marianne then feels her heart soften, and can fall in love with him in a new way, where before she felt she needed a wilder sort of passionate connection. She is not at all interested in conventions, and doesn’t see why she should abide by them, even when initially hesitant to go with Willoughby into his aunt’s abandoned house. She is also deeply private about her feelings; when Eleanor tries to get her to talk about her engagement or lack thereof, Marianne tells her she will know all in time, but does not tell her the entire truth until Willoughby sends back the packet of her letters and her lock of hair. Then, she is able to emotionally share what is going on, and reveal that they were never engaged in the first place.

Auxiliary Extroverted Intuition – an idealistic nature devoted to interpreting what inspires personal meaning: Marianne has a romantic nature, inclined toward dreaming, fantasizing, and thinking about how life could be rather than how it is. She also never sets herself upon one course in life, but is changeable, reversing all of her opinions about people upon deeper acquaintance of them—saying she can never care for Brandon and he is much too old, and then giving him her heart, admiring Willoughby and then despising him.

Tertiary Introverted Sensing – a preference for a lack of change and attention to select details: As time goes on, she becomes more settled in her sensing function, and learns to compare and contrast her behavior with her sister, and learn “what it should have been” (how she can better moderate her emotional responses, and be “proper”).

Inferior Extroverted Thinking – blunt and irritated by incompetence when under stress or overly focused on “the facts”: Marianne also shows lower Te growth in this, since she learns that part of life and maturity is to be sensible rather than let all of her passions constantly drive her forward. In a sense, she feels as if she is “settling” with Brandon. She can also be quite frank when provoked.

Enneagram 4 – an elitist, who feels alienated but seeks refinement to compensate for their longing for all the things they lack: Marianne is very invested in her identity as being someone deep and profound, who has an appreciation for art and poetry that others lack. She also is upfront with her reactive and emotional feelings, even when they are disruptive, seeing them as a sincere response to what is happening around her (being rude to her brother’s wife at the table, being rude to his mother-in-law by yanking a portrait out of her hands, and asking what some random girl means to them, compared to their lovely Eleanor; being overcome with tears and running from the room rather than to see Colonel Brandon, etc). Marianne sinks deeply into all of her feelings and prolongs them (deeply mourning her disappointments in love), but it also gives her a romantic mindset that allows her to eventually open her heart to Brandon, since she admires a man who is still pining for the girl he lost twenty years ago, and she sees that as a fine, romantic ideal.

3 wing brings in a desire to showcase their abilities and develop their talents: Marianne does have some attachment, in that she will adapt within reason to her circumstances, but her own feelings and takes on things always come first, and she finds her sister difficult to comprehend, because of her stoicism. She is quiet, withdrawn, and forbearing, while Marianne is a never-ending tempest of passion and emotion.
