Extraverted Sensing
Much like Ronan and John Sheppard, Lt. Ford does his best work when being improvisational and by adapting to situations as they change in real time, which is what Se excels at doing. He either leaps into action or wants to where others hesitate to assess the situation, because he knows he can control the outcome by his own physical involvement. He and Beckett butt heads whenever they are on a mission together, since Ford’s method is to rush into action, such as when he wants Beckett to fly through a hurricane to get back to Atlantis to help his commanding officer deal with a problem. Ford pushes him to take a risk by flying over the storm and down into its eye; he arms all his friends with weapons and leads a rescue / sabotage mission. Whatever he cannot do himself, like piloting the Puddlejumpers (due to not having the Ancient gene), he urges other people to do.
Even though this works well for him most of the time, once he becomes addicted to the Wrath enzyme, his behavior becomes more unhinged and reckless, as he tracks down and physically assaults Wraith, killing them to use them for their adrenaline. He also exposes his friends to the same enzyme, without caring about the potential blowback, showing that being on the “juice” is making him more Se-driven than ever.
Introverted Thinking
He finds logical solutions that solve problems, but that are not always respectful of other people’s autonomy; since he knows the Atlantis crew would never agree to eat the Wraith adrenaline naturally, he feeds it to them in their food after they have been captured, then keeps them prisoners until it starts to work. He figures once they see how much more powerful, aggressive, and strong they feel, they will understand why this is a good thing and help him obtain more of it to super-power up his soldiers. This is the kind of logical thinking that is objectively solid, but it ignores the fact that they would have said no. Teyla also says that while she likes and respects him, he sometimes makes logical choices that go against any kind of internal moral code; he thinks stealing to get what they need is acceptable, rather than framing it through a humanitarian lens.
Extraverted Feeling
Ford infrequently argues with McKay over the “moral right” of what they are doing. He doesn’t believe they should be tolerant and allow kids to continue committing suicide, in order to stay within the protective shield against the Wraith. He wants to change their society to fit his own moral beliefs, which is how Fe tends to tackle situations it disagrees with; it rallies others to its shared consensus and pushes for social change. It also makes him warm and likable, but after being harmed by the Wraith and abandoned, Ford becomes addicted to a Wraith enzyme, which changes him into a more aggressive, less emotional, and crueler individual.
Introverted Intuition
He does not show much Ni, except under pressure when he becomes convinced of forthcoming doom (such as when he thinks his “brains are going to explode” after being exposed to a nano-virus), or when he becomes paranoid about others’ intentions. He has no intuitive way of knowing if he is right, so he chooses to believe the worst-case scenario.
The Enneagram 7
Ford starts out as an opportunistic, good-natured guy, who can’t wait to get off-base and explore with John Sheppard. He just about goes crazy waiting for things to happen, and is delighted to leave with John to explore the island from the sky and see if there are any “sweet waves” on the beach. His decisive desire to “make things happen” is to avoid the uncertainty of waiting; he is reckless at times in his pursuit of helping his friends, because he would rather be in action than sit with the discomfort of not knowing if they are going to survive or not. 7s, unlike 6s, when they feel anxiety, fly into frantic motion rather than sit in their dread; it makes them want to act. The 8 Wing
Rather than hesitate, Ford wants to get up in people’s faces, to confront them, and has no qualms about bucking authority or outright ignoring it. He uses force with his friends once they are captured, by subjecting them to a drug they never agreed to take, and says they can either take it voluntarily from now on, or he can have it “force-fed” to them. Prior to this shift, he was better-natured, but still strong-willed. He disobeyed Elizabeth Weir several times and she had to warn him to stay in line, and he went into many high-risk situations without fear.
